Hello everybody! This is my first time in Blade Forum, figured I'd join up to gather a little knife info. I just purchased a new Buck 347 Vantage Pro with the S30V blade and im anxious to see how she's going to perform! I have 2 other Vantage knives with the 420HC blades and their great knives but im always looking to upgrade to a better steel. I also have the Buck QuickFire which is an excellent knife. I just wish it was a tiny bit bigger and had a liner-lock instead of a frame-lock. I'd much rather have knife I can open or close one-handed. Anyway im looking forward to getting my S30V Buck. Have a good one!

Congrats and welcome to the forum. Looking forward to see how you like it. I'm looking at getting a Vantage in near future just not sure which one yet.

Just recieved my new Buck 347 Vantage Pro and it's flawless! The lock lines up to the center of the blade. When it's closed the blade is dead-center instead of being off to one side like most knives. What more could I ask for, for $60? The handle is completely different from my other Vantages. It looks like stone washed carbon fiber. I'll have to say now this Buck IS my favorite EDC! Oh yeah, it does shave the hair off my arm right out of the box! This knife must have been made on a Tuesday and not on Friday...... know what I mean Vern????? Anyway im very pleased with Buck knives. This Buck S30V will be my EDC "Every Day Carry" from now on. Ya'll have a good evening! :)

Well it's been a few day's since I got my new Buck Vantage S30V and it's killer! You can tell a huge difference the way it cuts thru materials. Usually you have to saw or tug hard to get the 420HC blade to cut thru but the S30V blade just falls thru with ease. Best money I ever spent! :)

Both are great EDCs. The vantage series (pre jimping) have high hollow grinds, and are thinner behind the edge, making them excellent slicers. The newer versions are more of a saber grind.

I used a 347 for a number of years. They are in my opinion the best value for their price range. And made in USA too.

Part of it is the steel, but also the grind makes it a fantastic slicer.

Congrats and use it in the best of health!

Recently son told me that if he inherit my knives, he'll most likely sell off the ZTs, Spydercos, Emersons, Beckers and just keep my Buck Vantage Pro for himself. I thought it was extreme of him. LOL! It is my user and go to EDC and it is what I have in pocket this afternoon when I was scouting for a new campsite somewhere in the Western Sarawak jungles.

Cheers!

I got my new Lansky Professional sharpener and it works fantastic! Im use to sharpening freehanded but this thing does work very well. I've learned you have to work on the blade awhile to get the shape just right but when you do it cuts a perfect edge when you look at it under a microscope.

Just receive my BUCK Vantage Pro 347 S30V just now, I try it out & compared to my BUCK 110BKS. Emmm.... I still didn't found any big different between this two type of steel, even I understand there should be a "gap" in between. My 110 is really sharp, sharper than my 347. Anything going wrong?

I have 271's in 420HC and S30V

They both sharpen up really nice, but when using them to cut something they are identical.
The S30V takes more effort to sharpen, and does stay sharp longer.

Same thing for 12C27M, ATS-34, 154CM
They all seem to cut the same for me, just take longer to sharpen and stay sharp longer....

In my experience, 420HC will sharpen up a little sharper than S30V simply because it is easier to sharpen. If you spend the little extra time, the S30V will sharpen to the same sharpeness. 420HC holds an edge pretty well, but S30V will hold it better if it has the BOS heat treatment. However, S30V that isn't treated as well as the BOS S30V might not hold an edge all that much better than 420HC.

Performance wise, you may not notice a huge difference between the two depending on how you uses it and how much you use it. S30V should require less sharpening than 420HC but they cut similarly.

420HC is really a great all around steel which is probably why you won't notice a night and day difference. When you buy a Buck, getting a super steel over 420HC is sort of like choosing betwen .40 S&W and .45 ACP. 45 might have a little better stopping power but 40 S&W is cheaper and makes things dead just as easy.
