My take on the S&W HRT assisted OTF

Hey guys,
Thought I would give a review on these new otf style knives and share my experience with you on them. And yes I already know they are not anything close to my Pro-tech, Benchmades, Sog's etc... as far as quality of blade steel. But man they are fun for the price.. And take a edge easy.. And plus there is just something about a knife that can also double as a stress clicky that makes me happy.. Except the blister on my thumb.. And they are about as close you can get to a OTF assist knife with out breaking the law "yet"

Anyway the one I received was the Smith & Wesson SWOTFT model which has the tanto style blade. Made by Taylor brand knives. they also produce the Schrade otf assisted models that are based on the same frame and inner workings but have a different outer shell handle design. Which I believe is a molded zytel structure. I would like to take a moment to say something about Taylor brand knives customer service also. Everyone knows that no matter what the knife is they carry, but when it is time for service or parts replacement, we rely on reputable and prompt customer service.. And this is exactly how the guys over at Taylor brand knives are.. Hassle free and awesome customer service.

OK back to the knife review,,, fit and finish is on par, the blade play is extremely minimal and the action is awesome on it.. like any new knife they need to be worked in and possibly tinkered with to get them where they are perfect.. The thing fires extremely hard and locks up tight! I'm not sure what the blade steel is.. no markings .. ( Mr Taylor Chimed in below and here is the specs on blade steel- "4116 stainless steel blades and the black blades are finished with a titanium nitrate coating.
"..
)It is sharp enough to cut me 3 times and my girl friend once.. lol... And takes an edge easy with my crock sticks...

Has a side activated safety that locks the blade in the fully open and closed positions. There is a secondary open position you can get to when retracting the knife to the closed position that lets just a small tip of the blade to protrude to act like a perfect box opener.. The only thing is the safety will not engage in this position and is ready to fire but keeping away from the blade thumb switch, it works great for cutting tape on boxes with out going in too deep to damage items inside .. much like a box knife..

The pocket clip is attached on the butt of the knife via a " Mock" glass breaker, I say Mock because I have yet to try and bust out a window with it but doesn't appear to be carbide.. But I'm sure would make an excellent impact device if ever needed.. but the way it is attached allows for deeper carry when attached to your pocket which is a plus..

The feel in your hand,,, or my hand.. is very nice and comfortable.. the clip gives a bit and flexes around but other than that the handle feels good when you grip it in all positions.

To sum it up.. If your a fan of the assisted opening knives.. You should give these a try, They are a blast to play with and also cut stuff too.. and for the price they are IMHO well worth it.. the look of them says I'm a black tactical mall ninja knife and I wouldn't pull one out in church or the office to play with. but to add to a collection of assisted knives I think they should have there place. These may be the last of there breed if they outlaw the assisted opening knives.. God forbid

If your not a fan of the tanto blade style they also offer them in bayonet and clip point as well.. Anyway I thought I would share something with the forums.. and give my 2 cents on a knife I like and in no way mean to offend anyone by doing so ..

here are some pics..

Thanks for the review. I held one of these at a show not too long back and liked the way it felt. I opted for some different knives but I kept thinking about getting one. I prefer the spear point myself. I just cant get over how simply close to an auto they are....but arent considered one. I think I'll get one just for fun.

We have a new version of both the S&W brand as well as Schrade coming out on these OTF models, the new versions have aluminum handles and we were able to take 3.5mm off the thickness of the handles as well as tweak the second safety whent the blade is in the open position. The original versions as well as these 2nd generation models have 4116 stainless steel blades and the black blades are finished with a titanium nitrate coating.

Hope that helps and hope you enjoy these models.

It's interesting to get on sometimes and see what all you guys are up too...thanks for the welcome and keep an eye out for those new versions.

how far out does the blade go before the assisted mech takes over ?

A rough figure will be like 9 to 10mm before the assisted mech takes effect. I would definately want to buy the new aluminum hanlde ones that Mr. Taylor told us about. How much will these new one cost me? It will be interesting if the street price of the new ones falls in the mid 40s. :D

You guys are more than welcome for the review.. Just trying to give back a little something back for all the things I learn here, Plus these knives are way too cool not to share with everyone here..

I remember when I first opened my Kershaw Leek.. I couldn't put it down.. This knife is just like that but more.. the assisted opening mechinism is revoloutionary in its design and unlike any spring assist opener I've handled before..

It's hard to explain in words how this thing fires .. but it pounds open.. I thought my Protech TR3 was impressive when it fired open, but this one fires even harder.. I can't put it down ;)..
I am glad to hear about the new revised models and can't wait to see how they are.. if or when I get one I will surely put up another review on them as well.

And I edited the orginal post about the blade steel.. Thank you for the specs..

where is a good place to find these for sale? they look very good.
