Myerchin and other sailing knives

I wanted a sailing knife with a locking spike so after looking, I eventually purchased a "Myerchin Generation 2 Titanium Crew Pro Knife TF377P 3 1/2" closed framelock."

Despite no reviews nor any real information on this knife, I rolled the dice, crossed my fingers and ordered one. Fortunately, it turned out to be well-made and I really like it! I have carried it over the last two weeks and found it does what it's supposed to do. No. I'm not a sailor, and I live about 12 miles from the Atlantic, so I can't comment on rust resistance.
I'm glad I bought the smaller size as the "Captain" model is larger and the "crew" size is perfect for my needs. It's kind of unique (at least to me) in that it has a double frame lock...both the blade and the marlin spike lock via their own mechanism. It came with a well made velcro sheath that can be worn vertically or horizontally. Does anyone else have this knife? If so post a photo of yours here. Or post a photo of any other sailing knife, if you feel so inclined.

That’s a nice knife. I’ve been tempted to buy their set with the fixed blade and the separate spike. I’ve never heard anything bad about Myerchin.

I raced small sailboats for nearly 30 years. I usually carried a cheap lock blade folder because they tend to go swimming. LOL! The last few years I has an AG Russel Sea Scorpian knife/marlin spoke with dual frame locks. The blade is half serrated. It only costs $67.95 today on their website. I can’t post photos on this forum but you can see it on the AG Russel web site.

I almost bought one or the other of those Myerchin knives but never quite made it. In the 1970's and 1980's, I worked as a Commercial Diver and used this similar design Buck Knife mostly while on the surface. Cut a lot of line and spliced a lot of rope with it. Later working on Surface ships and Submarines I used a few different Spyderco knives and when I needed a marlinespike or fid I used separate ones that were either factory or I hand made a few from stainless rod.

I have one of those Myerchins, the larger version with the wood slabs....I've had $5 Chinese knives that were made better. Tons of blade play, when its closed side-to-side play is limited only by the scales. There is no detent to keep the blade closed, and when held inverted the blade opens freely. There is nearly an inch of freeplay in the spike, and when it moves the blade swings open freely. Never seen a bigger piece of junk......

By far the best marlinspike knife I have tried is the Boye cobalt crystal knife. It is rust-proof, flicks open with a blade slot, and the back lock works smoothly. It will drop half-way closed, at which point the ricasso rests safely on your finger. The marlinspike does not lock, but a normal comfortable grip holds the marlinspike open. The cross-section of the marlinspike is not a circle but instead it is a long rectangle, which allows you to do useful things by twisting it. The cobalt blade was BESS 76 out of the box! Only problem is that the pocket clip is way to tight to use; I've had up to 6 quarters under the clip with no improvement.

The AG Russell Sea Skorpion is very good. I have been sorely tempted by the $300+ version, but I'm not willing to pay that much.

I have a "Captain" version of the Myerchin knife. It is a flipper, but it takes a hard wrist flick to open it with the flipper; easier to use two hands. Mine has no blade play. The blade and marlinspike have good detents. The smooth section of the blade was BESS 160 out of the box, but the serrations were BESS 621. It seems acceptable in other regards.

That's disgraceful! I wonder whether it's a fake.

That is a good possibility, there are several features on this knife that do not look right. Does it actually have Myerchin and the logo etched on it?
Yes its real. Has all the markings, logos and sheath....Its a few years old so might not be quite the same as current models.

I think Myerchin had an older, liner-lock version that wasn't very good.

VJB: that's a nice collection you have there!

I have a myerchin folder with a spike and a separate Marlin Spike in a kydex sheath i made. Both are well made. I dont sail anymore, want to get back into it.

I grew up along the central Gulf Coast 1959-1988, and was in and around boats most of that time. I was a Boy Scout, and later a Sea Explorer, so knots and splices were a regular part of my growing up. I especially liked sailing and even taught it for several years.

Knowing this about me, a now-departed friend gifted me this beautiful sailor's knife.

It's an A.G. Russell, and was made in Japan -- Seki, I think. The marlinspike locks; the blade does not.

A couple of months late, but I like my Boye Cobalt folder. Cobalt and titanium, so it will never rust. Non magnetic, so it won't disturb a compass. It's in my EDC rotation.

Seems like I just posted this picture somewhere, but here it is again.
