Is there a list somewhere with either pictures or diagrams that gives the proper names of different sheath types and parts?

As far as sheath types for fixed blades, there is two basic types that I know of. Pouch and pancake. Various materials of course; leather, kydex, wood, nylon, and any mixture of those.
As far as parts, which do you mean? Like button flaps or straps? You can dig on these forums and find all different types and combinations of these types of sheaths. Actually there is another active post that shows many representations of these types for a BK2 knife.

Are you planning on making a sheath? If so you can start with the stickies on this forum and do a search. I've learned most of the little I know from these forums and most of the experienced sheath makers here talking shop and answering questions. If your new here welcome and feel free to ask questions. The folks here are really nice. This is the thread I started on my first couple of attempts at sheath making.

Nice sheaths Ponsau:)

Yes, I am new here, and on the verge of making my first sheath (still not finished knife). I've watched a lot of tutorials and read a bunch from many different sources in order to get it right.

Right now I can see about 5 basic types:

1)Scandinavian/lined/back-stitched ones with molded leather around the knife handle
2)pocket/pouch type for folding knives
3)one-piece leather folded over with a welt only on the knife edge
4)welt all around knife blade with two pieces of leather sewn on front and back (sandwich -style)
5)scabbards for swords

I figured there must be proper or universally accepted names to these types.

No really universally accepted names as far as I know (and I've been building them for 52 years) although #1 is mostly known as a Scandi, #2 simply as a folder sheath, #3 is known by most of us (even us hoary headed old timers like myself, Paul Long and Sandy M)is called a pouch sheath when talking fixed blades, #4 is mostly known as a blade only style, and #5 is just that a sword scabbard albeit a knife sheath built in that style is back center seam....

Chuck and I speak the same language here. A little further refinement : #2 a folder sheath can be constructed as either a pouch style or a blade style depending on the knife and the want and/or desires of the person buying the sheath. #4 can also incorporate the "Sash" style sheath which has no belt loop and only a stud on the front to keep it from sliding through the belt or sash, and the "Frog" set up which is a separate piece or hanger with a belt loop that slips on an otherwise sash sheath and locks on the stud changing it from a sash to a vertical carry belt loop style. #4 also includes the skirted or "Mexican loop" additions, and on and on and on.....

As far as I know, there is no list as such of the names for the style and the various names used are regional and subject to local interpretation.

Thanks guys, it's good to know.

In other fields if an inappropriate term is used, there is always someone with their panties in a knot...good to know this field is more relaxed:)
