Howdy,
I think our friend and comrade*
navman
deserves an appreciation thread to showcase his work, as seen through the lenses of his followers.
For years I saw fleeting posts by Josh showing his one-off projects, then, for a while, very little from him. I understand that during that "downtime" he was serving in the US armed forces, for which I am thankful. I was always impressed by the work he posted: clean grinds, straight lines blending into beautiful curves, classic blade shapes with notable deviations, and uniquely comfortable-looking handles. That's my impression anyway.
About a year ago I was glad to see more frequent posts from Josh, offering newly completed projects. For one reason or another, I was never able to snag one of his knives until this summer when I purchased this little Bowie in CPM-4V.
It's got ironwood scales that are absolutely beautiful, poor pictures notwithstanding. I was initially a bit apprehensive about the handle being too small for my hands, but after 7 months of use I have no reservations. Wonderfully sculpted and comfortable in any grip. The steel is easy to touch up with diamond plates and works very well with a fine, toothy edge. It fits well in the kitchen, field, and slaughterhouse.
I used mine a few days ago to skin, quarter, and butcher a doe with no discernable loss in keenness (despite an couple careless dings against a steel pan).
I need to follow up with Josh to have him make a custom leather sheath for it. Otherwise, it's simply an excellent knife for processing game.
As mentioned, this is meant to be an appreciation thread for Josh's work. I love my knife and want to invite you to post pics of your Navman knives in use and tell the Mundo what you like about them.
*in the classical sense, of course. Better dead than red.
