So, I became the owner of a Navy cutlass, and do not know much about it. To my knowledge it is a pre-1917 be they switched designs. However, I do not know any other infomation about it. Also, no date stamp that I can find. Is there any way to determine the date or any information about it? below are the links for the photos.

Thank you ahead of time for the info!!!!

Welcome Aboard

It appears it might be a proper 1917. The open guard type often regarded as the 1917 was actually later US contract 1941 swords (although the Dutch klewang inspiring the open basket clipped blade is late 19th century style).

There is a brief here regarding the two types.

I have seen at least one other copper plated bowl and that one also had a plated blade. A cutlass enthusiast explained some were treated in this fashion for parade or possibly cadet use.

Cheers
