Neck knife recommendations

I’m looking for a neck knife for a family member. He wants something easy to carry and small obviously but also adequate for self-defense and also for every day tasks. In other words, he wants it all 😆. I sent him one of my knives that is marketed as a neck knife (a Joker Avispa) and he said it was basically a shrunken Bushcraft knife and sent it back. He has a point. His criteria is, can I slash a tire with it safely and still carry it around my neck unobtrusively. No idea what to recommend him, neck knives are not my thing. Any recommendations from the knife brain trust? Thanks

There are too many neck knives for me to remember them all. For self defense purposes, technically anything that cuts can do that, there are lots of options for that, but that’s not my thing. Here’s some good neck knives, although not all of them are self defense marketed. For self defense purposes I would look at Fred Perrin’s various knife designs. He has his own handmade line but a lot of collaborations with manufacturers like Spyderco, example would be the Subway Bowie. Speaking of Spyderco, they make the ARK neck knife that is self defense related. Other than those I would go with something like the ESEE Izula, BK&T BK11 or BK14. Tops also has a bunch of knives geared toward self defense. Good luck.

Great suggestions, I actually own the Esee Izula and an older Spyderco Street Beat (when they made them as a full tang knife with micarta handles). Out of your list and knowing what he likes, the Esee Izula 2 may fit the bill quite nicely.

There are lots of neck knives (examples https://www.knifecenter.com/department/fixed-blade-knives/neck-knives ) but you need more parameters from him to pick one that suits him, like how flat does it need to be, how long blade, how long handle, what blade style?
Yes, I need to get more info from him. I don’t think he really knows what he wants. He is counting on me to put a bunch of them in front of him (well, pictures) and to pick one that appeals to him. The trouble with dealing with non-knife nerds 😆

It's not specifically a neck knife but comes with a nice sheath and is small and I think from your family members "strange" requests would be right up their street - Civivi Orthrus.

Go simple with a tdi or something?

I have the space force one which is quite usable for cutting tasks.
That’s cool they make a Space Force version now. I actually own a TDI as well. Great knives. I showed him a picture and he didn’t like the shape of the pistol grip handle. I even sent him a video of a SWAT guy demonstrating how fast they are to deploy. Not his cup of tea 🤷‍♂️. He likes very traditional knife shapes. Clip or drop point, flat grind. Traditional handle shapes. Oh, and he HATES ring type handles of any kind. And serrations 😂. Oh, and he doesn’t like black coatings. I recently recommended a Cold Steel SRK in SK-5 because he wanted a cheap beater knife and for the money, you just can’t beat it. He absolutely hated that knife and kept commenting on the black coating. He is a pain in the ass actually but hey, you can’t choose your family. Keep the suggestions coming.

Bradford G3 Warnie, I believe there is one fs right now in the fixed blade forum. I have no affiliation with the seller but it looks like a nice one. Also, maybe a Fallkniven WM1 as well, it has an awesome handle very comfy. There are a ton of neck knives out and about these days, good luck on your hunt.

I have a few that may be of interest. Most recent was designed as a counterpart to an NAA Guardian .22. I have another that is a ringed two finger Wharncliffe.

Here is a little two-finger ringed neck knife to go along with the Karambits I have been working on. I had a small piece of 1 1/2 inch wide by 5ish inch long S90V left over from my recent projects. Nice and light, and should be pretty handy when done.

How about one of the minimalist "Sting" variants? IThe design was originally marketed as a "boot knife", but that was before the neck-knife concept became popular.

I think CRKT has one.

I own three. Perhaps consider the Outdoor Edge LeDuck. I like it. 8Cr is okay and for me good enough for a necker.

can I slash a tire with it safely
I get all my tire-slashing needs met by my Leatherman Wave. My neighbors hate it! The cops tell me I need to stop! But it’s alright because it works for me.

🤣

On a serious note it sounds like he has no clue what he wants, as he wants “traditional” but not “bushcrafty” and tactical but not featuring any standard hallmarks of modern tactical neckers.

Personally I would not get him anything. Point him to some knife websites and let him look around. Imo.

Yes, I agree. I keep suggesting stuff to him and he keeps rejecting them. Waste of time, he doesn’t even know what he doesn’t know. Which is par for the course for him. Thanks for the suggestions folks, it’s interesting to see what people like in the neck knife world. I’ve never considered a neck knife myself but I like the idea behind them

I wear my knives around my neck all the time, but they aren’t usually typical “neck knives” they’re more like small to medium belt knives.
