Need advice- I have engraved knives that I no longer want to be engraved

Hello all,

I have two knives: a Benchmade 530-901(REI edition with blue handles and S30v) and a Spyderco Endura 4 FFG in purple. I had both of these knives engraved and had given them to my now Ex girlfriend. They were engraved with anniversary information and when we broke up she didn't want them. They are good knives and have been barely used and have been just sitting in their boxes. I had them professionally engraved at a place called Things Remembered and bottom line is: I don't know what to do with them.

If I were to sell them, should I remove the engraving somehow?

What would be a good way to remove the engraving?

Any other ideas for what to do with them?

Thank you,
AJ

I have considered having them reground and yes the engraving is on the grind. Do you know of anyone on here that still will do regrinds?

If the blades are actually engraved, the only practical way to clean them is by abrading away the steel until you get past the bottom of the engraved areas. This can be done by hand on bench stones, or by power on a belt grinder.

You could also keep them as they are and either use them or gift/sell them to someone who is not bothered by the engraving, or to someone willing to take the time to clean them up. Get a gold membership and sell them here on the BF exchange?

Have you any idea how deep the engraving goes into the steel?

You could always send them back to Benchmade for a new blade. Last year it cost me $35 to have a new blade installed on a 710.

Yeah I think Benchmade is listing new blades at $25, Lifesharp at $5, I'd do that or leave it alone over trying to grind out an engraving. Unless the engraving is very shallow, enough that you could just almost polish it out.

As far as the Spyderco, the Endura is popular enough I'm sure you can find someone who doesn't mind the engraving. Maybe give it to one of her family members you really liked, they'll appreciate knowing you cared, and you won't have emotionally significant durable goods from your previous relationship around.

About 10 years ago I knew this guy... he met a girl named Bianca and quickly wed her (talking weeks here). As a surprise he go her name tattooed across his arm. When they broke up about a week later he realized his mistake but had that silly tattoo. His solution? He had a big red box with the word "void" tattooed across around the name. :D

Just reminded me of that.

I've removed laser etchings/coatings/grind lines by sanding, but it takes awhile. If BM has (they gen'ly do) blades in stock, that's the way to go-- cheap!

If the engraving isn't very deep, I'd bead blast the blades and leave them like that, or possibly give them a nice acid wash afterwards.

You could probably find someone who would trade for that 530, engraved or not. *wink wink* *nudge nudge*

;)
