I used to be a pretty active member of this forum, but it was long enough ago my membership lapsed and I had to re-up. Back when I was a much more active collector, it was a great resource. I'm confident you folks can help me once again.

One of the folders I used for EDC is a Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Covert (model 05795) in ATS-34 that I picked up probably back in the 90s. I recently lost a pocket clip screw, and it's been more challenging than I expected to replace it.

I contacted Gerber customer support and they were were helpful. I gave them the info on my knife and they sent me replacement screws at no charge. The problem is, the screws they sent are too short.

In the photo, the lighter screw on the left is the remaining original. The 2 on the right are the replacements, which are too short to solidly seat and hold the pocket clip in.

Does anyone know what the size of the original is? With that, I can search for replacements on my own.

Gerber can probably tell you the thread pitch and then it should be easy to find a replacement. If it's really fine I'd look to Brownells.

Hobby lobby is where I went to find the screws I needed to replace the few I needed on an old Gerber. took the knife in with me and tried a few till I found the ones I needed. Not sure if that will help you but hope it does.

I hope you have luck with that. I am commenting so that I can stay abreast of this thread. I have Gerber AFs of different vintages, and I have never needed to replace anything, but I like knowing that these things could be issues down the road. And I hope to hear how it works out for you.

Good suggestions so far. I hadn't thought of a hobby shop as a source for small screws like this. Do most have a good selection for that sort of thing?

I would think so. Most high end r/c cars are mostly metal bodies now days so they have all kinds of small screws and the high end r/c helicopters are all carbon fiber and titanium so also have a ton of small screws. Just make sure the hobby store has the good stuff. Not the premade r/c cars, planes and helicopters.

Do you not have a micrometer to measure the length of the original screw? If you can find one with the same head and pitch but longer, you an always grind it shorter to match the original, e.g. https://www.knifekits.com/vcom/torx-flat-head-240-25ct-tini-black-p-2115.html

I didn't...until I saw one on sale at an auto parts store a couple weeks ago. I forgot I had it.

I measured the one I have that fits and it came in at .129.

The resource you listed is helpful, but any advice on how I can determine if the size is 0-80 or 1-72?

0-80 screw diameter is 0.06", 1-72 is 0.07", they are close in size so get your moneys worth out of that micrometer ;)
