Need ideas for a Norse style axe display.

I got this idea from the inside of one of my Amon Amarth albums.
2 norse style axes crossed.

I am wanting this to hang on my wall. These will (most likely) NEVER actually be used. 100% display. Though, I want them constructed so that they COULD be used.

With them being for display, I would really like them to be VERY finshed, no flaws. Use some very nice wood for the handles. Purpleheart, or whatever else you guys think would be eye catching. Something that would finish up real nice.

I must insist that the heads be US made/forged. No Cold Steel China stuff.

One of my first thoughts, was to start with a Fort Turner Norsemans Tomahawk.

Suggestions for heads, styles,
suggestions for handles finish, wrap? Links, pictures, any suggestions you guys have would be great:)

first of all, well done on the amon amarth reference. i just hooked up a cd player in my shop so i could listen to viking metal while i forge. next, i just bought a cold steel war hammer. i went to hobby lobby and bought a few spools of artificial sinew. i doubled a sizeable length (40 ft or so) and hooked it to a nail in the wall. i then used a power drill to twist it into cordage. i then wrapped the bottom portion of the handle with this. finish it with a super glue finish and it looks awesome, very vintage. if you go to the PBS website and search "runes" you will find a rune converter. type in whatever you want converted and it will display it in runes. very cool stuff.

being very very Norwegian, and coming from central/northern WI, I have always grown up in a secularized Scandinavian culture. I have a bookshelf in my 1 bedroom apartment with a longboat model on it, I want to carve my own wood stein next. A couple of the better reenactment guys make some nice wooden shield replicas which would look awesome over a double bit axe on the wall... I have so many ideas to turn this apartment into Little Norway 1000AD, but I need to draw a bear tag and make at least 2,000 dollars a month to make it happen.

Dont suppose you would have a picture of that?

on a somewhat related topic.
If you dont already know, Check out MOONSORROW.
IMO, the absolute BEST Viking metal.

If this does not make you want to forge something, then there is no hope for you.

thats good stuff man. sorry, i dont have a picture. im going to try to use some steel rod to rivet the two pieces back together today. if i had a camera i would show you what i did. moonsorrow is good stuff. turisas, therion, ensiferum, equilibrium, and bathory are good also. if i have a chance to get some pics i will. i also stripped the paint off that warhammer with a brass wire wheel that left a really cool looking finish. im sure the CS norse hawk would look the same way. CS is good stuff too man. dont underestimate their durability based on price. good luck with the project brother.

How about these:

maybe just do some work with a CS hawk.... nothing like taking a 20 dollar taiwan tomahawk and turning into a piece of art

I have several from the Gransfors Ancient Axe collection, including the battle axe. I was going to mount the battle axe above my fireplace, crossed with a damascus (well, pattern welded) Viking sword (my heritage is mainly Danish). However, several women friends cautioned me not to do that until after I'm married (at which time the wife probably wouldn't agree to it anyway!). Instead, I have a beautiful art photo done by a nature photographer I really like. Much more date-friendly for us single guys!;)

I once got an American forged replica of a medieval battle axe from www.hbforge.com for a lot less than the Gransfors pieces.

Been there, done that.

About a dozen times.

I REALLY want something that is ,at the VERY least, US made.

It would just gnaw at me to take all that time, for something that im wanting for a display, knowing that it had a "Made in Taiwan" sticker on there. :thumbdn:

I know they are solid units for the $20 investment, but you

,,,yall know what im getting at.

Allan Foundry makes the Viking Bearded Axe which is based on a piece found in Gotland in Sweden. Ragnar has them in stock now (they often sell out and then take months to get back in stock) here: http://www.ragweedforge.com/ThrowingCatalog.html

Good luck with the project. I have alot of Norwegian blood running in my veins as well (middle name is Thor, seriously) and I like the sound of what you're doing!

That Allan Viking Bearded Axe would look really good if paired with the H & B Forge Viking Axe that is of the different two-pointed style. [I have the Gransfors Bearded Axe and like the look.]
