Like the others, I bought the model 17 for my collection.
The handle is narrow and straight, with a completely smooth micarta surface. The storage space within the handle is big enough for maybe six asprins. It would be far easier to carry them in whatever pocket in place of the screwdriver you need to remove the handle. I suspect the space under the handle is there primarilly to improve weight and balance. But, the sneaky eyed ones, would probably want to tell you it's a good place to keep your cyanide tablets.
It is a different type of survival knife. While, the handle seems strange at first glance, it is not uncomfortable. The handle shape allows the hand to move anywhere on the handle, and the relatively narrow handle gives the knife a nice blade heavy feel. You can actually wrap your hand entirely around the guard and put your entire thumb on the large thumb rest area in front of the guard. This allows you to bring much more force and control to bear for the fine work than most other knives.
I have since added an Eagle Industries sheath (cordura over kydex with pocket) to my model 17 to make up a really nice little rig.
Some knives, like the Cold Steel Trailmaster, seem comfortable when you frist pick them up but later betray you by hurting your hand after extended use. The model 17 may be just the opposite. I really haven't played with it enough to know.
