Recommendation? Need the lightest folding knife with a gut hook?

I want a folding knife, so I don’t have to have it in the sheath in my pack, and I need a gut hook on it.

I have found this Buck 660 Pursuit Folding Guthook Knife that is 3.4 ounces, and if I can’t find anything lighter then I’ll likely go with it. I am going on a hunting trip where I could be walking 10+ miles a day with my pack and I am trying to shrink everything inside down to be as light as possible. It doesn’t have to be the best knife ever, just the lightest! Thanks

Gerber Myth or Gator also have gut hooks and I believe they are marginally smaller than the Buck - but they do weight a couple ounces more.

Welcome to the forum.

Is this going to be your only knife ?

You can't really go wrong with a Buck I'd just go with that, like Shane said though Gerber makes quite a few including the Freeman along with the ones he mentioned.

3.1 ounces would’ve been awesome, but I can’t find them anywhere, they’re both discontinued. Would’ve been perfect

Yes. It’ll be more than enough. The smaller and lighter the better. There will be at least one or two other people with me, and they will likely have some thing as well.

Welcome to the forums. Hard to go wrong with Buck.

Another possible suggestion is the Havalon Piranta with the replaceable blades. They make a gut hook blade too.

If you go to the Havalon website and check under Piranta blades, you will see a gut hook option. $10 for 3 blades. Currently OOS tho.

I'd just go for the Buck but it might be worth checking out Havalon and their options.

EDIT: I might just carry a Mora HD fixed blade just in case and take on the extra 3.6 ozs.

OK . I was only really concerned if it was a solo effort . :)

Maybe one of them wil fit ?

I’ve actually got a similar knife and got a hook set up now by Buck, but once you add in the sheath it ends up moving it way over my weight limit. When I bought that set up it was the lightest I could fine, but I’ve even if I go with the bucks 660 I’ll be saving another ounce and a half.

Or
I thought that might be the answer! Too bad it has a sheath and is unfolding, which would likely put it over there 3.1 or 3.4 ounces. At 2 ounces, if it would’ve been folding that was the winner.
You can carry without blade locked and without sheath
Just blade/s stored in small pouch or box

I thought about this with my current knives, I just don’t know where or how I’d store them that would be safe, especially considering how I will be hunting. Having a sheath or a folding knife would be best, but don’t think I’m not trying to devise something super light anyways.

I just figured there’d be one of those super tiny mutitool type knives that had a fold out gut hook on it, like a Leatherman style gizmos, that was sub 3 ounce.

I thought that the knife didn’t fold? I assumed it was like some of the other replaceable blade knives that appear to be a folding knife but the lock mechanism on the back is actually to replace the different blades versus folding.

Yes after clicking on their YouTube video, I had actually seen this knife before and this video before. I think maybe I could wrap it up with tinfoil or something and put a little bungee on it and then take it into the bush with just the one gut hook/knife insert. Just might be the way to roll!

What’s with the weight limit?? 🤔 One or two ounces really make that big of a difference?? 🥴

I agree: an ounce or three isn't going to be noticeable.
You could lose more weight by eating a lighter breakfast.

One or 2 ounces doesn’t mean anything for that one item, but I’m going to be hiking in off trail situation with my whole pack and shrinking that pack down is the whole goal. I’ve already shrunk the pack down 3.26 pounds off my current pack from the 2021 season, and I’m hoping to shrink another two or 3 pounds off of it for this years trip. I’m pushing 60 now, so just doing this extreme back country trip without a pack is going to be tough, even with all the extreme training I’ve been doing the last 20 years, as well as really bearing down on these last few months. So yes, the whole reason I’m doing it is to replace the already light knife and gun hook that I have. Trimming an ounce or two or even three will add up. For sure, this knife doesn’t have to be pretty it just has to get the job done in a compact light weight.

I got into ultralight backpacking about a decade ago, and I quickly learned how everything you put in your pack adds up. Shrinking items down to be the smallest AND lightest they can be adds up big time when you take each and every item into account. I shrank 40 pounds off of my wife and my backpack for a trip one year.

To give you an idea of the insanity, my toothpaste and deodorant are just tiny droplets sandwiched in cellophane. Trip is six days, so I have got six droplets of toothpaste, and six shavings of deodorant sandwiched between cellophane. Toothbrush, it is cut down to 1/3 the size by chopping off the end! Of course I could shave off more weight by not bringing toothpaste or the toothbrush, but I like to feel clean and energized! I don’t want to stink either lol

What are you going to do if you shoot something? Packing something like an elk out can mean several trips with hundred pound loads.

This is hunting for Whitetail deer. You process them in the field and pack out the meat between 1-2-3-4 guys, depending upon where I happen to be that particular hunt and with whom. Just another reason why I don’t want to be hauling in a ton of stuff with me that’s unnecessary. With that said, packing out all that weight is the last thing on my mind for a hunt like this, once you have success you’re prepared to take all that extra weight out and happy to do it. Being fresh and surviving to that point is necessary though first.
