I'm not gonna post a photo, you can find one of the SOG Pentagon online easy.
I don't have many fixed blade knives:
CS trail master in 01
CS SRK in Carbon V
CS master hunter in carbon V
and I just got a SOG Ranger 2.0 that I bought here from vic2367

However, even though those are enough for my needs, I have a hankering to get me a double edged dagger type blade like the SOG Pentagon. I know SOG'S folders are mostly mediocre in my opinion, I have a Tomcat 3.0, I also just got from vic2367, and a Vulcan tanto and both are nice designs, but the production could be refined IMO. I've had others over the years as well. HOWEVER, you get what you pay for and the cost of these knives is equal to their value.

Anyway, I want to get the pentagon, I looked at some reviews on youtube, wealljuggleknives has one, but I wanted to get y'alls opinions and see if anyone wants to suggest alternatives. I have my own particular likes and dislikes, but instead of listing all that I want to hear your opinions first. It's basically a straight spear point dagger with an edge that is serrated and an edge that is straight.

Cool knife. The newer Taiwan made version is even better than the Japanese original. I bought the Pentagon after seeing it in the movie "Kiss the girls". Yes, I'm a victim of product placement.

I have an old Pentagon somewhere.
It seems like an okay quality and is a sturdy little dagger.
Not usually one for serrations, they are restrained on the Pentagon.
Nice and 'grippy' handle. Not too big and not too small.
Dagger points can be flimsy - not overly so on the Pentagon.
Its a small dagger, so wont do the job of (bigger) more business-like knives, but if you are in the market for and okay quality, compact and relatively sturdy dagger, you cant go wrong with the Pentagon.

It is a fine dagger. It is of course limited because of its design. What do plan on doing with it?

I own both the Seki and Taiwanese versions and consider the Seki version vastly superior. It is cool if you think the opposite but you are stating it as though it was empirically so and give no reasons.

The cross guard is more secure. The shape is more of a true dagger. The serrated side is better done. The fit/finish is much better. The steel is not as good but will be more rust resistant. How well do you need a dagger to hold an edge anyway? My newer pentagon came with off grinds and blunted tip. Isn't the whole idea behind a dagger that it is pointy? I've had 3 Seki pentagons and all three have been much better than the newer version. They did cost $20-$50 more and you have to get them used. If you get one on the bay they will cost 2.5x. But to me, just the shape alone is worth the extra price. Top is the Seki.

Hey, thanks for the input. Craytab, dude, thanks for taking the time to show me those. I def. like the looks of the seki better, the serrations go further towards the tip, which I like and the blade is a more likable design, for me anyway. The steel does worry me a bit Aus 6, I'm just not familiar with that.

What do I intend to do with it? Honestly, keep it for self defense and MAYBE take it outdoors. Although honestly, I'm not sure it's the kind of knife I'd take outdoors except on short hikes or mushroom hunting forays. I just want a small defensive dagger with two edges, one of which is serrated. I'm not violent, not really, and I don't carry firearms, but I like knives, fucking sue me.

Now I gotta know your reasons for liking one over the other.

What do I intend to do with it? Honestly, pretend like I might ever use it against another human and MAYBE take it outdoors. Now I gotta find a SEKI version. There are exactly none on ebay right now.

No problem.

Don't worry about AUS 6. Especially in a knife you will likely never use. Doubly so with a dagger. AUS 6 is like AUS 8 but won't hold an edge as long but will be more corrosion resistant. It will do just fine for an unused dagger ;)

They come up on the bay often but you will pay a premium. The ones I bought all have come from the exchange here. I buy them and keep the one in the best condition and/or with the best sheath. Good luck getting the next one before me :D

Damnit, now I gotta cruise the "fixed blade knives" too. I'll prolly just get the cheaper one $55, on ebay. Like you said, never gonna get used, it's just not an outdoor knife IMO. Not gonna replace my CS master hunter or SRK when I go out.
BTW, liking that Esee you have posted, what do you have to say about those for outdoor camping and hiking and mushroom hunting type activities.

I've had quite a few Esee 4s. I liked the idea of them more than the actual use of them. I finally came to realize the benefits of thinning out the edge on a knife. I've done this on many of the knives I own now. The Esee 4 greatly benefits from thinning the edge out from the factory. This makes it much more useful for cutting. Before doing a reprofile I could not get by with a 4 as a dedicated camp knife. With the edge thinner I love the knife. It also greatly benefits from in the least having the Canvas Micarta scales (opposed to the linen) and is at its best with the G10 scales from TKC. The Venom 4 I have is to pretty too use and I have another one that I do use hard anyway.

Well put, I totally agree.

It has more blade to it meaning that it won't snap off as easily when stuck in the body. Secondly, it comes with a far better and more secure sheath. Being a former US Army Ranger...I was trained to remove sentrys via knives and I find the newer Pentagon to be a bit better than the old one.😉

Well, the only seki version on ebay is priced at $225, and that knife doesn't seem worth anywhere near that price to me, soooooooo, I'll be getting the newer version I guess. Sometmes, it just comes down to affordability.

The older model is far nicer IMO.

Blade shape on the older model is more true to what I perceive as a true dagger design. Dont want thin and pointy? - then its most likely not a dagger you want.

Neither would be a choice for removing sentries, lol (ohh man, what people write on the interwebs....)

Patience my friend. I've seen them go on they bay for far less and the ones I got off here were even less.

It is better built too. Take any of the same model SOGs but produced in the different countries and the Seki version is always better put together in my experience. The older NW Ranger I have blew the newer one out of the water. The newer kydex sheath fits the older knife BTW and the older leather sheath is actually quite nice, and I usually don't like leather. Saying the sheath is better on one or the other isn't a very valid argument since there have been at least 4 different sheaths available (likely more). And as for killing sentries? LOL.

I just got it an NW Ranger 2.0, black, Taiwan version. Is that the better one? I really like that knife. You've convinced me I'll have to keep looking around for one.

Nope, sorry. The Seki version is better made from my experience of having them side by side. Of course more expensive.
