What is the difference between older 80's and 90's Gerber Guardian Backup's and the 2007 NIP ones??
Is there any difference in materials or steel?
Is the tang mark different?
Thanks all......I'm keeping my eye on a few on Ebay

Moved to general discussion.

I think the older ones were made from carbon steel, the new ones are stainless. I don't know the particular grades or dates, sorry. I know mine from the early '90's is very magnetic. At one point they had cast aluminum handles, then switched to molded santoprene (a soft rubber-like plastic). Mine is santoprene, and it's very grippy.

Cool
That's the info I needed to know :)
I'll try and find a 90's one
I LOVE carbon steel

all of my gerber mark 1's, 2's, and guardians are stainless IIRC.

IIRC they all are.

I've had 2 old Guardians. The oldest is now lost. It had a satin stainless blade and a black aluminum handle. Black leather sheath. The newest has a stainless blade with a crappy but functional black paint job and a camo aluminum handle. Camo nylon sheath. I've got 2 MK-Is. Both are stainless. One has a black leather sheath. The other is nylon. Otherwise identical.

I bought a Guardian in the early eighties. The handle is cast aluminum with some sort of black epoxy coating and the blade is 440C.

Bought my Gerber Guardian about 1980. Stainless blade. Black, aluminum handle. Don't know what steel.

I bought a Guardian inthe early nineties with ally handle, cordura sheath and it surely is the "famous" stainless surgical steel.
