I just got a $25 gift card to Amazon, and i've been considering getting a CS spike for years, but never pulled the trigger. Has anyone seen the new ones? They look like an improvement, but i'm not familiar with the steel they're made of

It's either going to be one of these, or a CS spike hawk most likely

Specifications:
Blade Length: 4"
Overall Length: 8"
Steel: German 4116 Stainless
Weight: 2.3 oz
Blade Thickness: 3 mm
Handle: 4" Long Faux G-10
Sheath:Secure-Ex® Neck Sheath With Bead Chain Lanyard
Entirely re-engineered for this year our Spike series continue to raise the bar for neck knives! Thin, light and super-tough, their razor sharp, zero ground blades, are complemented by heavily scalloped, textured handle scales that offer a comfortable, secure grip.
Integral quillons provide a safe stop for index finger and thumb, while the textured Faux G-10 provides excellent positive traction even when your hands are cold, wet and slippery.
Available in four distinctive blade shapes (Bowie, Drop Point, Tokyo and Tanto point) they offer all the strength of a solid steel one-piece construction (much stronger than any tactical folder and even rivaling the strength of some boot knives) while still being light enough to carry all day without fatigue.
The brand new Spike series is come complete with all-new Secure-Ex sheaths that provide even greater retention and safety. Super lightweight (weighing in at 3oz in the sheath!) the Spikes can be comfortably worn around the neck 24/7 by using the black bead lanyard provided, or carried on a waistband or belt by taking advantage of their new Tek-Lok™ compatible design.
Easily concealed, razor sharp and light as a feather – the new Spike series by Cold Steel!

Ive used 4116 steel from cold steel before. I find that it tends to lose its edge quite quickly but it is easily sharpened back to shaving sharp. for that price I would consider buying it.

It looks like an effective weapon. Can't say much for it other than that. The handle doesn't look like it would work very well for utility cutting. Neither does the tanto, saber ground blade, though it does seem to be thin behind the edge, which is good. I like the other blade shapes better; I'd probably go with the drop point.
For $25, I would buy a CRKT Minimalist (either Bowie or Wharncliffe blade,) if I wanted a neck knife, or one of the CS hawks. The Spike Hawk wouldn't be my first choice- I think I'd go with the Frontier- but no matter which variant you choose, it should be a ton of fun to use and mod.

I opted for the hawk. I am going to be playing with some mod ideas while it's on it's way.

Love the hawks, decent steel and they look rustic when you strip em. Spike hawk is completely pointless unless you're attacking a person or structure, I'd opt for a different, more useful/friendly hawk.

Absolutely hate the steels Cold Steel uses. And very much dislike them opting to go with their own materials for handles and sheaths which seem to keep changing. Faux G10? Dubya tee eff man? Faux is a polite word that people pretend doesn't mean fake. Is real G10 so expensive? Maybe they should stop making so many versions of knives ie. three sizes per knife, multiple similar designs, in order to afford real, quality materials and steel.

Other than that, I do like a lot of their designs and would buy them in a heartbeat if they had better materials. Even if they jacked up the price to reflect those materials.

What?! I thought it was AUS-8! Lemme check.

No way! Stupid steel choice. Just stupid. I don't think you'll find much satisfaction in it. Look to other models. They'll be better choices.

the earlier type was pretty bare looking,
but seeing that they were meant as hide away shanks,
it made sense that they came that way.
it was made of crappy steel
but i guess the idea was for a disposable single usage only edge tool.

these newer models look dolled up.
there are scales now to improve grip,
dunno, but i fear this has hampered the idea of a flatter and low imprint hide away.

The steel is the fatal flaw. I'd hold your fire and look into other products. Are you set on a neck knife? Ill bet we can find you one that is same price and better steel (though as I've been warned you will have to do the searching as we sadly cannot provide links). What do you like/dislike about the spike, OP?

What do you mean "we can't provide links"? People are not allowed to deal spot or link non-forum vendors but that leaves a huge amount of companies that can be listed, and last I checked any maker can be linked if it is their own website.

Also, AUS-8 is garbage. Yes, I can get a razor edge on it, which is why everyone uses it on low end knives. However that edge will disappear almost instantly once I put it to work.

I don't see where the OP asked about a neck knife. I believe he was interested in the exact model he showed. Personally I think the older wrapped version was pretty cool, and took up less space. I still say the hawk, even the spike hawk will bring much more satisfaction.

Familiar with many Cold Steel products but not one of these...I do generally go for more tactical blades but I just don't like the looks of the spike series. Just too flimsy looking. That being said, I think the new handle is an improvement on the earlier ones. If your heart is set on one of these I say go for it. If you do, make a post or two telling us how you like it. However, if your looking for an easy to conceal blade that is outstanding for the money, go with a kobun as mentioned above.

The steel on these isn't a "fatal flaw", the same steel is used in their Roach Belly and Canadian Belt Knife, and those hold up just fine. No, they won't compare to S30V, but they're easy to resharpen and are just fine for average use(and frankly, the Spike line is intended for use as a weapon, not as a hard daily use knife, so you likely will NEVER use it for what it is meant for...unless you just dig the design, you're better off picking something else if you want something for utility purposes).

Strictly a last ditch shank or throw down piece if you ask me. Failing that, a letter opener. :D

Personally I would save a bit more dough and get something more substantial, like a Griptilian.
