Just wanted to share the news with those who don't peruse other forums: Apparently Larrin Larrin 's new steel is already being produced as a prototype and being tested by knifemakers. Here's DeadboxHero DeadboxHero spilling the beans:

This should be a higher vanadium content version of Magnacut. I'm pretty excited to see what it can do!

Where has the chemistry been announced, or any aspect of it? To my knowledge, this is all entirely under wraps. Shawn has already made a test knife of the alloy, for anecdotal testing purposes, as have I. You can read about it here

Shawn’s has already been put through its paces, and appears to be working flawlessly. Opening day is tomorrow, for me, so with any luck I’ll be able to provide some experiences, as well.

People, let's please respect Larrin Larrin , DeadboxHero DeadboxHero and Matthew Gregory Matthew Gregory ...and the integrity of the project. There are good reasons why they are keeping the information close to the vest for now.

When they are ready to spill the beans and provide the underlying data, you can be sure this will be among the first places for it to be reported.

I will go hunt for it later, but I believe Larrin has hinted that his next steel would be a higher vanadium content version of Magnacut. This is just my speculation about this steel. Thanks for posting your knife, I hadn't seen it.

I see. Totally fair to speculate on your point - for those of us that have been included in the beta test group, we were required to sign NDA’s for this, so until the Powers That Be sign off in it, it’s bad form for us to be tattlin’. 😉

I thought the sarcasm was obvious enough. I was taking a jab at everyone who already pretends Magnacut made everything else obsolete.

I don’t do sarcasm.*

*…that’s sarcasm, btw. 🤣

Check out more details on Matthews knife here

In the link, he shows how thin that beautiful hollow grind is, he is taking it hunting when the season starts soon. So, it should be exciting to see when he shares his experience with use.

I should’ve had the forethought to post Darrin’s knife. Thanks, Shawn. Feel like he doesn’t get enough press.

Darrin is a real one, I love those button lock folders with fat carbon scales.

Note how I strategically avoided the hand satin finish he did on his 😳
The next knife 😜

The prototype demands tribute. 🤣

interesting. looking forward to see more details and such as it comes out.

pretty neat era we're in nowadays..... where we have specific steels being formulated for cutlery uses........

Well it didn't happen on its own Larrin Larrin has been on Bladeforums for over 20 years now.

We basically have an "inside guy" working in the steel industry.

He grew up around knives. He was obsessed about knife steel long before any of us cared.

Now you have somebody who is basically the most brilliant mind in the knife steel industry that has an intimate understanding of how the actual chemistry works and how to bend it to his will.

We often see rapid progress flow so freely in every industry in the modern world it's often marginalized when true innovation comes.

There is a belief for many that things will naturally just get better and better on their own without any need for great inventors like in the past.

For many, things are just expected to appear from thin air.

However, I strongly feel that without Larrin, we would not see such innovation; the industry wasn't even moving in the direction he was showing it could go.

When MagnaCut was released I've seen many people admire or disparage Larrin; I guess there's lots and lots of steel experts.

Well, what we don't see is it took the right person grown in a unique environment well over 20 years to create the metallurgist we see today and now we all get to enjoy the fruits of his passion.
