I am a happy user of many Mora knives, and the Classic No. 1 has been a long time favorite. Sadly, the old Classic No. 1 is not made anymore. Retailers are sold out of remaining stock, so the old Classic No. 1 is selling for collector prices.

Now that the old Classics have been discontinued, I thought it would be helpful to compare an old Classic No. 1 with a new Classic No. 2.

As a reference point, the old Classic No. 1 used to sell for about $16 dollars retail, and the new Classic No. 2 sells for about double at $32 dollars.

The new Classic line has substantial changes- a better sheath, red stain handle instead of red paint, a finished blade spine (but still not sharpened for fire steel), and most importantly it has a full rat tail tang and rivet construction.

Here is how Mora describes the change in construction:

“The previous Morakniv Classic No. 1 and No. 2 had a glued tang, something that was due to that we used the same blade for the Morakniv 510, old Morakniv 511 and the HighQ collection (same blade as Classic No 1) as well as for the Morakniv 521, Morakniv 711, Morakniv 911, Morakniv Companion and more that had the same blade as the Morakniv Classic No. 2. The new collection Morakniv Classic knives have a full rat-tail tang that runs through the handle completely and is riveted at the back-end. You can also see some traces from the woodturning machine making the handles, as its previous version had a cross pressed into the wood to get the torque when milling the handle. It has been replaced with a diamond-like shape that we refer to as our rhomb, a design pattern on our knives.

The edge angles and blade shapes are basically the same, only the new Morakniv Classic No 3 has a slightly shorter blade, than the previous one.

Also keep in mind that the sizes and shapes always have varied some between the different knife manufacturers and also over time, and as we are the only ones left we made our new Morakniv Classic knives to honour all the knife manufacturers that ever was in Mora.“

The upgraded Classic line is very nice, and seems to be a better product than the old Classics. However, the old Classic No. 1 is still my favorite, mainly because it is slightly smaller all around than the new Classic No. 2. Unfortunately, Mora is not producing the No. 1 size knife in the new Classic line at this time, but they did tell me the No. 1 size will likely be added down the road. Note that the new Classic 1/0 is much smaller than the old Classic No. 1.

And don’t forget the new “Classic No. 1 Exclusive” is being offered with a laminated carbon blade, but it sells for around $80 dollars, and this was not yet available at the time of this post.

T
he new No. 1 Classic Exclusive is probably the ultimate Mora traditional knife, and I look forward to getting one soon.

Thanks and great write up! I gotta say I find the Mora naming system very hard work, but your post will help people a lot.

I got a red stained No. 2 myself a couple of months ago. I like it better than the discontinued versions due to the full length tang, but I still consider the sheath below the quality of the knife. I've looked up the cost of replacement sheaths, and for the combined cost of the original package and replacement sheath I could have saved myself some trouble and just bought a decent Finnish puukko.

I like the Mora 2 Classic, but it is not the bargain most people think of when they hear the word Mora.

I've about two dozen Mora; mostly from 50's. All have laminated blades, really excellent knives. Broderna Jonsson, old Frosts, Carl Andersson, Mattesson. Don't personally care for the modern line of Morakniv.

A few years a dealer, who has, sadly, passed away was clearing out old stock, (cheap) so I bought up his leftover Moras. RIP Ragnar! I didn't know he was ill at the time!!Mora More 1.jpg Mora More 3.jpg
I sold a few, and on a whim, I kept one of each red-handled ones, and four with laminated steel. They remind me of my youth, before grandchildren, when I chopped wood and carried water!!
I always had one on my belt!! I wish still I had the ones I whittled with my pocket knife!! I gave several away, back in the day. These were inexpensive hardware store items back in the early 1970s!!Mora Ragnar 1.jpg Mora Ragnar 2.jpg

Glad I got my Number One when I did a few years ago, if the mono-steel versions have been "discontinued", and the only one available now is a laminated steel job for $80 plus.
Seems it was just a month or two ago you could buy a laminated Number 1 blade for around $20, and put on your own handle, plus a Hide & Drink heavy leather sheath with a "101 Year Warranty" for around another $18. (a very nice sheath, BTW, and it fits both the Number 1 and Finn Bear like "it was made for them".

I'd heard the Classic 1/0; 2/0; and 3/0 were semi-mini knives, maybe useable by an pre-teen or someone else with x-small glove size ... or possibly as an wall hanger ... Thanks, but No Thanks. The shorter blades would not bother me near as much as the small handles.

I heard through the grapevine you couldn’t get the 2/0 size for love or money in USA so I rushed out and bought a few here in Australia.

Its not bad, but quite small. I am not sold on it.

The diminutive size and unfinished spine, added with a low price and consistent quality makes the Classic No.01 a perennial winner.

It is a fine instrument for sure.

I love my "original" #1, #2, and #3 made by kj eriksson back in the late 80's.
Dyed handle, full length tang, and split ring retention device.

Nice to see them going back to this construction, as I was not a fan of the glued in partial tangs.
