Hi. Can somebody help explain the difference in these two knives. I just purchased the one without Remington printed on the blade. Any additional information on the umc folding R1, R2, R3 and R4 would be helpful. I'm guessing it has to due with age. Thanks for any help.

I have an R-4. Awesome knife, manufactured by Camillus in the early/mid '90's. Jigged Delrin scales. Brass liners.

It looks like it was based on the Camillus 99 Scout pattern. But the opener and cap lifters were swapped to the rear, a coping blade replaced the traditional awl, and a wood saw was added to the front. It has distinctly better fit and finish than nay of my Camillus 99's.

Take a look at the Remington book, I just bought a copy. Be warned though, I started out on the Camillus Remington knives, I only have one now, an R4. I have gotten into the older Remington knives. I have about four. An original Official Boy Scout knife well used, a serpentine jack and a couple barlows. They are my favorite knives, and I have kicked myself for passing up on a few boys knives at a show last year.

Here is a funny one for you - I bought one of these same Remington R-4 knives years ago (probably early 90's when I was a Boy Scout leader) - I've never opened it until I saw your's pictured in this thread today - I never knew it had a Sheepfoot blade! OH

LOL!!!! Hidden treasures, my friend. :)

The Ritchie book doesn't have much information on the Camillus made Remingtons other than the Bullet year knives. You might have better luck on the Camillus Collectors forum.

While we're talking Remington's, I have a UMC R-4 in wooden presentation box. Looking at the shape, I assume that the blank spot held a steel hone? Does anybody have a picture of what it looked like? I'd like to track one down and complete the set.

Thanks for all the info. Does anyone have an answer to the original question. Was it common for some Remington R2 knives not to have Remington printed on the main blade. Ty.

Beats me, but looking at the two knives in the OP, it appears to me that the unmarked blade has been polished. Maybe an earlier owner did not like the marking. A lot of the fellas around here buff away the markings from their GEC's for that reason. Those knives appear to be Camillus-made. They weren't all that pricey when they were made 20 odd years ago.
