Can you imagine if this was A frame-lock instead of a butto-lock?

Oh man, what a killer knife That would be. It’d be thinner, lighter etc. I wish WE would’ve made this in FL.

I swore-off button locks. I really did. I could not resist this one though. That black/CF/blue accents one is such a good-looking knife. Incoming!

I’ve also read reviews of the action on these latest WE button-locks like this and the Ziffius and people are raving. No lock-stick, perfect detent etc.

I’ve had a bad run of some CIVIVI button-locks that turned me off. We’ll see.

"Exciton" .

Knife is cool enough , but the name is less than worthy . 🤢

You’re not the only one. I’m done with Civivi button locks and for that matter WE button locks after buying a Cogent that jammed up after a week.

I think the Cogent is a flawed design. I had 3 separate ones all with bad lock stick. Sucks cause I love the blade shape and size.

I haven’t had a problem yet with the WE button locks, I guess I’m just not a big fan of button locks in general. This one is really cool though.

Never owned or touched a Cogent… guess I’m not missing much. I have two Altus and three Conspirator and love them all… never had an issue with any of them.

^^ I have 2 Conspirators and they’re both good to go as well.

I have two Conspirators and two Chevaliers. (I did scale swaps for both models.) There is noticeably more lock stick on the Conspirators but all have a little. I'm not sure that lock stick is the same animal with these button locks as it is with liner or frame locks. I think it might just be a feature of how they do it. It doesn't really bother me, at least on these models.

The issue of stuff (particulates, pocket lint, etc.) getting up under the button is a real concern. I've experienced it exactly one time but I was able to work it out fairly quickly. The question is what if I couldn't and I was in the middle of doing something, didn't have tools, etc.. See, liner and frame locks are mostly accessible. They don't tend to trap things and would be easier to blow or wash out if they did. The spring and button space are less accessible and might require full disassembly if they get gronked up.

The spring is another feature I don't love in the modern wave of button locks. They are just little tiny springs and they seem loosely set into their space. They can also be a little tricky during reassembly. I haven't had one wear out or get mangled yet. I don't know if one will. It just seems a little tenuous versus liner, frame, or compression locks.

^^ Yup - all good points. I don’t like springs in my knives. I love frame-locks. As I stated way above, I wish the Exciton had been a frame-lock instead. It would’ve been a lot thinner. I don’t like the handle thickness a button-lock requires. The button-lock-stick drives me absolutely nuts. I’ve had them with and without lock stick, so it’s definitely possible to design them without the stick. It seems in WE’s case their high-end knives generally don’t have it. I have a Culex and it’s fine.
This Exciton and my Culex don’t have even a hint of it. Perfect operation.

I cannot stand ZT/Kershaw‘s SpeedSafe assisted non-sense either. Just don’t like springs in my knives. Lots of amazing knives could‘ve been so amazing as frame-locks vs assisted or button locks. :)

First world problems I guess.

I haven't tried a WE button lock yet. Part of that is the problems described above. Part of it is my finger instinctively reaching for a liner or frame lock when it's time to close a knife. 😜
While I generally prefer a more hand-filling handle in use, they don't always carry as well in pocket. I guess it depends on the knife and the pocket. 🤷‍♂️

One thing I do like about button and compression locks is avoiding the trap of crappy ergonomics in the lock-bar access or interface. I've had lots of liner and frame locks from multiple countries and across a wide cost spectrum that just don't feel good there. Sometimes, it is proud or toothy lock-bar jimping that creates a hot spot during use. Sometimes, it is crisp or downright sharp edges or corners. Knives that get the ergonomics right in this section are surprisingly rare and trying to fix ones that don't is probably the most common mod I end up doing.

BTW, SpeedSafe is horrible and should have gone away once good manual actions became cheap and plentiful. I understand why it existed, and I used to like it twenty years ago. Now that you can get satisfying manual action on bearings in $20 knives, it just doesn't make sense anymore.
