Hey all, I'm new to green wood whittling, but, I need a small axe to remove parts from the timber. Just looking for suggestions for a solid entry level woodworking axe.

Get the Vaughan sub zero hatchet for 20$ , it's a 1 day project when you get it but I use mine for carving all the time.

For a true Carving Axe within your budget I'd recommend the Robin Wood Carving Axe (see link). It has the right edge bevel, short beard so you can 'choke-up' behind the Bit for detail work, nicely profiled handle, and weighs about 1lb 11oz. IMHO, this is one of the best entry-level Carving Axes available. He also makes a great Spoon Carving knife. I like it specifically because it has a generous handle.

If, you want a smaller Carving Axe, you might try Blacksmith Svante Djarv's Small Carving Axe. When I first saw it I thought it was a child's Axe or a toy until I had an opportunity to use it during a Bowl and Spoon carving class. It is a great spoon carving Axe! IMHO, a little too small for bowls. But, your experience may be different. Here's the bad news. Svante and his Wife Elsa are a two person shop with a total production of 4,000 items. Obtaining any of their products is an exercise in patience. Which I have a limited amount. Be prepared to wait months, unless you get lucky. Unfortunately, the Svante Djarv Small Carving Axe exceeds your budget limitations.

I've also included a link to Country Workshops. Drew is a Master Woodworker and is a tremendous source of information and tools for greenwood carving.

I hope this helps.

Just a thought. With the current 'Brexit' issue, the 'Euro' is trading at historical low points. I just checked the exchange rate for the 'Euro' is at $0.90. Usually, it's $1 USD = 1.50 Euro. So, it might be a good time to buy.

For a general purpose axe, I recommend anything by Council Tool. I have 2 of their axes and love them. You could also cruise garage sales, flea markets, etc for some used axes/heads and fix em up. Just this weekend I found a plumb cruiser double bit for 5$. Needs to be rehung, but with the cost of a handle from house handle and the 5 bucks I spent on it, plus sundries of sand paper and whatnot I'll be out about 15 bucks on the whole thing.
