newbie here askin for tips

Hey there, my name is pat and i am from battle creek mi. Was searching for leather strop belts for my new belt sander and found you on here. I am really wanting to start making my own knives for personal use and was wondering if ya'll had any tips for getting started. Any help would be appreciated.
