Ok, SO yes first post and I may not be in the right place but MAYBE someone here can point me in the right direction.

Little background, I'm 46 and have always loved knives and swords but wasn't always able to follow in my interests for too many different reasons to post. Finally starting to do a few more things for me these days. I've seen videos on making knives from random metal objects, railroad spikes, car frames etc. I'm not the type to go out and buy a cheap ass forge from Harbor Freight and start smashing hot metal with a hammer without some sort of general instruction from someone who knows WTF they are doing. I've gone on line and looked for people who maybe offer classes either one on one or small 5 - 8 people classes in the New Jersey area. It seems like every article I come across is from 2018 or earlier and all the blacksmiths are either not in business or their sites are not showing classes.

I'm not a complete internet moron but it just seems like there should be a few options in the area to go take a basic metal working class. SO, my question is if anyone here is in the NJ area and knows of such a school / trade shop that offers these types of classes.

As for me personally I work for my family business and we manufacture gears so I've been around metal for over 18 years but we use machines to make our stuff and no fire is needed. I have access to a lot of random scrap pieces of metal so I could be a valuable asset for a class if the type of material we have lying around is useable. Anyway that's my sad little first post. Feel free to ignore, answer, mock... LOL I have thick skin

If you're willing to help let me say an early thanks.

Welcome, I know of no one. But you might consider contacting a blacksmith even if they don't have classes and ask if you could pay to watch for a day.

Also check out the shop talk section here. There are a ton of resources about blacksmithing that can help point you in the right direction.

It's hard to say what's in your local area, but I'd look into blacksmithing groups/associations in the region. Where I live there's an active blacksmithing association that has meetings, classes, and does demonstrations at fairgrounds. It's always an area at the local big fair that I gravitate to. These associations are a great group of hobbyists that are really enthusiastic about what they're doing. There's also adult education courses at colleges in all sorts of topics, but most of their metalwork is focused on welding. There is indeed a blacksmithing association in New Jersey for you to look into:

I’m 31 and also in NJ. I‘d love to take a knife making class or two, or more lol. There seems to be nothing like that around here.

Blacksmiths are not cutlers or "bladesmiths." In general most blacksmith knives I've seen suck.
