I finally saved up enough money to buy a nice fixed blade for my bug out bag. I researched and watched videos and finally decided on an ESEE 5. So far two websites said they will not ship to NYC. I know the laws here suck, but come on, isn't this overdoing it a little bit.

F the man! Just tryin' to keep you down. Don't worry nothing bad will happen in the NYC.

The problem is, the Manhattan DA will go after the seller. No major dealer will take a chance of massive fines. Keep trying. It is really locking folders that are under direct attack right now. Just that dealers know better than to take a chance.

I say F--- NYC law, have it shipped to a friend out of state via USPS priority mail and have him forward it to you.

I actually replied to the owner of the last site I tried to buy from and explained to him that it is legal to own that knife in NYC, just not to carry it around in public places. After explaining that it was to be a BOB,SHTF/camping knife he said he would sell it to me. Basically saying that NYC laws are so vague and worded so poorly that he just wants to avoid any problems, which is perfectly understandable.

I was going to go to eBay but, after getting such quick customer service from this guy I really wanted to stick with him and his site for the purchase. I read good things about his site and apparently it was all true.

By the way, my knife will be shipped out on Tuesday.

Glad you got the knife. For the future, you might want to try Knifeworks if you want things to go down without a hitch. They'll ship to NYC. Stand-up guys who've donated significantly to Knife Rights.

You aren't trying very hard. Only 2 dealers? There are iterally dozens that sell ESEE products. In the end, good to see you got the knife yu wanted. Persistence pays off.

Actually I checked just about every knife site I could find. A lot of them were sold out of the knife I wanted, having only the OD blade available. The ESEE 5 with black blade is apparently one of ESEE's most popular knives or they just don't make a lot of them. Plus I was starting with the sites that had the best price with shipping. This site had it for $144 shipped to my door, most other sites were starting around $150 plus shipping. Funds are tight for me so every dollar saved counts.

Have you tried a Kabar/Becker BK-2? I got my RC-5, now ESEE-5, first - and the BK-2 last summer - from a local shop - with the extra cost Micarta grips. I bought my oldest son one for Christmas - from a site more known for it's books - for <$60 shipped! Here they are together:

The RC-5 had been used some when this picture was taken - it's finish holds up well - and drags a bit when splitting. The BK-2 splits more easily - and it's slicker finish sure looks used now!

It's the bean counters that won't allow sales of fb's in some states. Case in point: A large mail order site refused to sell me a common Puma fb, despite sending me catalog after catalog with it 'on sale'. I wondered how they new I was a native New Yorker (Brooklyn)... but it was Alabama, where I have lived for years, that they wouldn't ship to. I asked a well known local deputy about even carrying such a fb. He said that if you could sit down with it 'on' and not do yourself an injury, it was okay. I guess a broad sword is out. I know some locales have laws against carrying them, but you can still go into several local sporting goods stores and buy automatic knives. Ultimately, I did find that Puma fb - and more - and bought them - through the US mail. Keep trying.

If you need a backup BOB knife... consider the BK-2!
