No Tang Stamp on Case XX Knife

My dad bought this knife back in either the late 70's or early 80's. He usually bought a handful of knives to give out as Christmas presents for family and friends. He was going through the knives to check them. He opened this one and found there was no tang stamp on the blade. The number is on the back of the tang though. It is 6308. Has anyone ever heard of something like this before? Is it a mistake, or something that happened quite often? I have tried to research this, but I can't find any information at all about it. If you have seen this before, what would the value of this be? Thanks for any help!

Pics would help, show what the tang looks like, both sides also the knife. You can post pics using Photobucket, upload your images, copy the IMG code and paste into your post.

Answers should be limited to knife info please. No discussion of what it may or may not be worth.

As a registered member you are not allowed to ask questions about the value of the knife. That is reserved for paying members, who are allowed to sell in the exchange (Gold membership is the minimum). Any questions, please read the forum guidelines. There's a link in my signature line.

Pics?

A '6308' should be a 3-blade whittler pattern (you're mentioning only one blade, which is why I bring it up), and the CASE tang (date) stamp would ordinarily be seen on the mark side (front) of the main blade's tang (probably a clip blade, on the whittler). The pattern # ('6308') is ordinarily on the back side of one of the secondary blades. If you're not seeing the regular CASE tang stamp on any blade, I'd assume the knife to be a re-build/modification of some sort, perhaps with the original main blade removed, or the original tang stamp ground off.

Added the pics to Photobucket and posted them in the original post. He said he bought them all brand new and this is the way it came out of the box.

It's either a Lunch Box knife or a Counterfeit. I've never ever seen an 08 Stockmen with a Clip Secondary Blade.

I stand corrected. American Premium Guide to Knives and Razors-Jim Sargent, pg.247 But they DO have Tang Stamps!

It looks like an appaloosa bone 6308 on the mark side, the pile side bone is a different colour from what I have seen.
The clip blade on mine has a different profile, narrower at the choil. The is a slight hint of the pivot pin, maybe a factory reblade but why the mark is missing I have no idea. Mine is an 87 3 dot..

Best regards

Thanks for the replies. That's the weird thing about it. My dad bought them brand new. He bought 4 or 5 others just like this one. The others all had the tang stamp. For whatever reason though, this one didn't. It's so strange.

It looks like it came from the factory that way so it would be considered a factory error. I have seen a very few other Case pocket knives (not in that pattern) over the years with the same error.

Thanks. Glad to know there are more like this and it's not just a fluke of some kind.

Any idea on the value of those other knives?

You can't ask about value without a gold membership. A missed mark mistake doesn't make a knife more valuable imo, just somewhat questionable.

Best regards
