Norlund hatchet owners/users, are these little hatchets really very usefull?
i know Norlund has a cult following, but are these little choppers able to do real axe work?
Ol Jimbo did a great review of hatchets. he especially liked the Norlund hatchet. he showed how they could be effective splitting large logs and such, with lots of pictures to prove it, but
anyway i have several Norlund hatchets but rarely if ever use them...
there is not much weight to help drive the bit into wood
thanks for all your reply,

They are popular but I think there are many other brands of vintage hatchets that are better and can be had for less money.

They were made right next to Collins and Mann Hudson Bay heads out of the same steel, the difference is a stamp. I think their value lies solely in the nostalgia factor.

well.
i got another little Norlund Tomahwak. original handle, not too bad shape.
had only a metal double bit axe wedge in the eye, (ouch) no wood wedge.
took a little persuading too, but i got the metal wedge out. cleaned up the kerf, made a new wood wedge from poplar lathe and hung 'er.
gave her a try out on some storm damaged Elm limbs. not bad.
if one of you computer geniuses would help learn me how to post images i'd do just that, post images .
thanks for your reply

Buzz, it looks like you have a photobucket account so posting images should be fairly easy.
First, open photobucket and then the image you would like to post. On the right side of your screen you'll see "share links" with the options of "email & IM, direct, HTML, and IMG." Click the link next to IMG. It starts with [URL= followed by a Web address. Clicking this will copy the link. Now open bladeforums and reply to a thread. Where it allows you to change the font and size etc you will see an image thingy that holding a your cursor over it will say "insert image". Click this and paste the URL that came from your photobucket image. Click OK and it's done. Make your post and your image should be in it. I hope this makes sense. If not, hopefully someone else can clarify. Good luck!

Posting images from Photobucket, see reply #7 in this threat
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1312147-Handle-for-Peruvian-Hatchet

Note: when you click in Photobucket in the IMG box, you don't need to click on the insert image icon in the BladeForums editor. The correct format you need for BF will be copied to your clipboard, So you only need to paste it in your post.

i've been creek jumping for a few days and recovering from same.
i'll post more photos tomorrow.
i've been testing a new handle treatment using a mixture of equal parts BLO/Pine tar. once the goo is applied to the wood the handle needs a few hot days to dry, then a torch or heat of some sort is used to melt (drive), burn the Pine Tar into the wood. the wood pores need to expand so the tar will penetrate thus the heat/torch.
seems kinda complicated. we'll see.

anyway i'll try to post images on Wed.2 , Sept. 2015 of the before and after of the Norlund hatchet.
thanks AdogD,
