Hey guys. My Norton 360 product key expired and i don't have the extra 80 dollars to renew. Would one of you have an extra key you aren't using out of the 3, and i'll return the favor in the future. I am never a begger, but i really need to get some anti virus back on my computer and have no means to so far, and i downloaded a few programs people recommended, but in the end i really like norton.

You got lots of great advice in your other thread for free anti-virus programs....

I know, i downloaded AVG and AVAST and i didnt like the UI. I just feel like they don't do as good of a job. I like the all in one of norton 360 as far as being able to just monitor one program, it does most of the thinking for you :-). I appreciate the advice though, if need be i'll have to use one of those.

Both AVG and AVAST are better than the Norton antivirus. Just use them. They take up less resources on your computer AND do a better job.

You hardly use the UI on an antivirus anyway.

Besides that.....using someone else's product key is illegal as accounts on most software isn't transferrable.

I agree with this.

Most people like Norton overother programs because it looks cool and pretty, but in reality it's doing the same job as the other systems and really dones slow down your PC. that's why I use AVAST and will remain using it. very simple. not good looking but it works great and doesn't slow the PC down at all.

I've never used anti-virus systems because they suck all of your system capacity and become a royal pain in the ass. And I've been a heavy internet user for over a decade now.

Just use Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy together and you'll not have a problem as long as you do regular sweeps.

The key is to use gmail or hotmail etc for emails. This shields you from the nasty ones the procreate by sending out via contact lists.

Having a product like norton only helps if you get infected with an old virus anyway. You are just as likely to be infected by a new virus with no anti-virus protection because new viruses are designed to circumvent - you guessed it - programs like norton anti-virus.

That isn't true at all. Learn about heuristic detection. Chances are your system has been infected already, and/or constantly. The programs you mentioned running do nothing to stop or detect trojans and viruses.

Norton is one I would never use. But antivirus protection is important. It will not slow down any decent computer, and the good programs run much better with less resources than norton.

Ok so avast or avg? and whats a good good firewall & spyware? do spyware & adware detect on the same program?

I'm an mod of a tech forum if you're on a budget or want free for av:
Go with Avast.
For Spyware & Adware:
Go with Malwarebytes anti malware. If you can spring for the full version go for it, as the full version has realtime protection with IP protection.

The Anti-Virus with the highest catch rate, and fastest website block is
Kaspersky Internet Security-But it's expensive :P.

I am a Security Engineer for a Fortune 25 company. And all of my home computers use AVG Free. At work we use Nortons. The less said about that the better. Anyone want to guess how many Post Mortems I have to do on outages caused by Nortons/Symantec? I won't tell you...but it is painful.

What would you recommend for firewall and the whole package, but seperately, if you know what i mean.

Have a look at Microsoft Security Essentials, it's free and it works.

I agree.

I'm running it on one machine now, and when my subs to Live OneCare expires, all the other machines will be switched over.

Security Essentials has a built in firewall.

I also use Webroot Spy Sweeper, with excellent results.

I have a spare license for Trend-micro pc cillin if you want... Shoot me a mail or PM. It's good till Nov 2010.

As I also suggested in the OP's first and earlier thread about the same issue.

If anything. MSE takes up the least amount of resources over the other programs suggested here and in the OP's other thread.

Also, if you aren't already using Firefox or something other than IE switch ASAP. I'm a fan of Firefox because of Adblock Plus and NoScript, they help loads with filtering out unwanted content.
