I'm not sure if this is exactly the appropriate forum for this, but I'm looking for a good set of nunchucks. Like knives, I'm not looking for your average run of the mill wooden chucks, rather the best ones out there period. I ordered an octagonal handle aluminum pair from allblackbelt.com that should be pretty nice but I'm not sure on the quality because they were only $30 with shipping. For general information, I am a black belt in Taekwondo and am trained in the use of nunchucks, I am just looking for the best, strongest, most powerful/damaging pair of nunchucks available.

Any information, opinions, experience with high quality nunchucks appreciated ~ Joel

It really comes down to:

1) Handle Material
2) Length of Handle

3) Type of connectors
4) Length of connectors (string, chains... what types)

5) Ball bearing or traditional thread through.

6) Overall Weight

I personally like the mini-wooden chucks with the long ball bearing chain connectors and short 8" handles.

I am looking for one that have a very light handle 12 - 15" with about 1" width. nylon cord. Overall length no greater than 30". Of course the handle material must be able to withstand some serious impact.

hmmm...if you hit and hurt someone with it, isn't that strong and damaging enough?

maybe i'm misunderstanding...maybe you are looking for something nice to collect, as in something made of exotic wood or something. i've seen them come in kamagong or bahi wood. those have nice grains on them. if you feel $30 with shipping included for an aluminum pair of 'chucks doesn't cut it, then maybe something of this nature of exotic wood with beautiful custom carvings maybe more pleasing. try www.simbatta.net. they maybe able to help.

I know this is totally unresponsive to your question, but figured that you might want to look because of your general interest in 'chucks. Check out the full-contact sparring 'chucks at www.actionflex.com . We wear headgear and a cup, then go at it. Sometimes also 'chucks against actionflex sticks, knives or two-handed swords.

The actionflex 'chucks aren't very good for training maneuvers, forms, etc., but they are great for sparring.

I don't know what you define as quality. I practiced nunchaku for years and found them to be a limited for their versatility. Never really had any rice to thresh... so, anyways.

I found that when I entered nunchucks, nunchaku, nunchakus, chakus in google I got back tons of vendors that make them. I particularly remember way back when one company made some high quality nunchakus out of acrylic or some polycarbonate material with chain or cord link. They were famous for their chakus video instruction line. I think the link now is http://www.sundragonmartialarts.com/ Looks like they have some high quality hardwood nunchakus availble there plus a plan to make custom ones for sale. If you can get an authentic pair from Okinawa, Indonesia, or China with some history to them then they would probably be rare keepers.

Usually, the bulk of the nunchakus that were quality were based on handle material. Most manufacturers or makers used the same type of connecting system based on the ball bearing swivel that is so rampant and availible. It is either that, or they used some robust cord, cable, or rope material to connect them together.

Now I see they have gone way beyond anything availible to me back when I was training. I still don't see anything in titanium, with a high tensile wire, that I can convert to a baton. If they made that, it would be one step closer to that funky convert a weapon billy club that was used in the most recent and notable Daredevil movie.

Good luck.

A thought... you might want to query the educated people at www.selfdefenseforums.com about this, also. They have a weapons section which may have an archive of all threads on this subject. I am sure they could help you there, also.

There are some models that connect to form a baton, made of aluminum. But I'm not sure of their quality. I might order a pair to find out. Saintokillers, I am looking mostly for something just nice to collect. Like with knives, some people collect gentlemans style knives and other people collect "tac" knives. I'm kind of looking to build up my nunchaku collection with some high tech models, if available. lol, maybe g10 sleeved in a thin layer of titanium which could be anodized any color, and a high quality ball bearing swivel attachment? Who knows, just looking for some good ideas, and thanks for the replies so far I've found them all constructive. :)

I also have a few pair of nunchaku. The ones on the wall are some exotic wood with dragons handcarved in the handles. The ones I use to practice kata are oak with chain and ballbearings. A trick I learned was to put a little powdered "Comet" in the ball bearings. Swing, play and twist away for a few minutes. Rinse and dry then lube with powdered graphite. Smooth moves result. I have a set of the aluminum body screw apart baton style. Don't waste your money.

My two bits worth.

hi stompy...

a friend of mine made one of some exotic hardwood with ivory and mother of pearls inserts on it. it looked like a pool cue but it was georgeous. but then again he does make custom pool-cues as a profession. i think he gave that nunchakus to his karate instructor...let me see if i can find his #.
