Warning, pic heavy thread.

I got the Spyderco Bow RIver with the mindset of having a lightweight hiking or camping knife. What I ended up with was the perfect kitchen utility knife.

I can't say enough good things about it, blew away my expectations. My family has not babied it, and it's our go to slicer for everything. The black oxide coating has held up perfectly, it has scratches but the coating has not worn at all.

To start we got it to try plain edge for steak cutting. After using a plain edge, I don't ever want to cut steak or meat again with a serrated steak knife.

Fruits and veggies fall into pieces just looking at the Bow RIver.

And utily wise, slices open all the food packaging so easily.

All around for 40 dollars I have fallen in love. So have my kids, they love using it, and it gets them into helping prepare the meals more. I have had to sharpen the 8cr 2 times in the last 9 months, but 30 seconds on the sharpmaker has it shaving.

So in closing I wasn't looking for a kitchen knife but ended up finding one! Once the tan is back in stock, I'll get 3 more for the rest of a steak set.

Agreed. I originally bought mine for slabbing out King Salmon caught during the salmon run. But like you, once I used mine for kitchen use, that’s where it has stayed. I’d like to pick up a couple more in OD/satin (just like the looks) once they come out again. What a great knife this is.

I agree it's a great kitchen knife and the steel is more than adequate. I have the version that RUPSD has, with the fixed pins in the handle. I prefer those for the kitchen as there's less spots for gunk to get stuck.

Awesome! Thanks for bringing this up. This knife has been on my list for a long time. They were out of stock everywhere I looked for a while, I just recently started seeing them in stock again. 8cr13mov is actually my favorite low end steel, it's very friendly to use. For what I see myself using it for, I dig this version, and the price as well.

I was interested until I noticed where it is made. I suppose the price reflects that, but it is not for me. If they made a higher end version made in the USA, yes.

Nice I want one.

I understand why some people won't like it, but it's just the kind of knife I want available in the kitchen, at the dinner table or to hand to a buddy while butchering deer in the garage.
This is also just the kind of knife that's going to get passed around fishing on the pier or at deer camp and Spyderco knows it. I bet you can even pick one up at some Walmart or Costco. I'm sure a lot of people have or will become familiar with the brand because of this knife.

Oh jeez, I was trying to not get one of these............... Should take about 45 seconds to put a working edge back on. Must look away.............

It takes an amazing edge on just the sharpmaker, and the fine to ultra fine stones get it laser sharp! And it lasts for a few months of good use before resgarpening is even a thought.

😃 just saying........

It's not an interesting or exciting one, or even a good one, but isn't it kind of ideal for an unsupervised kitchen knife?

My kids have zero respect to place care in how they use things, this knife included. Half the mornings I wake up it's got dishes stacked on top of it and was soaking wet over night with who knows what sauce or liquids.

And it's completely fine! I know the desire for more interesting steels, but imo price point on this dictates boring but useful steel.
