2 weeks ago my wife and I were riding bikes in a Florida state park when we came across about a 6 or 7 foot alligator blocking our path, it was cool but my wife was freaked, I just stood about 6 feet away watching it. Between the gators and monster pythons that are thriving quite well here in Florida, I suddenly felt that my Bud Nealy AT attached to my bike frame was not up to any eventuality. I think its the very thin G-10 grip. So yeah, this is my reason for shopping a new knife. There is one problem, RC-3 or RC-4 (I would like to get both, not possible). I need help deciding. Waddya think? Please don't say carry a gun, I want a new knife.

I say an RC3 and a RC6 on a stick......if he rushs pass you and the RC6 on a stick that means your in his jaws and RC3 or 4 ain't gonna make a difference really, maybe get the SERE and hack your way from his/her belly. 6 foot away is within the gators strike zone and he be on you and or wife before you could move and ya'll would be in serious trouble

I've seen bullets bounce off Gators.
I grew up in Florida.
A knife will only penetrate from the bottom of a gator.
The skin is too tough on top.
You only have a second to keep them from rolling taking your arm or leg with it.

6 feet is way to close to be standing.
They can sprint at K9 speed for 20 or 40 yards depending how big they are.
If you do get grabbed I'd say something like a Randall 14 with finger groves and double guard to stab it under the chin is the way to go.
It's brain is the size of a walnut and that's the only place to stab one that will stop it.

I've spearfished sharks and hunted Gators.
It's very tough to get a knife through that hide.
I'd get a .357mag, .44mag or 10mm with hardcasts if I was worried about gators.

;)Everybody knows even you that you need a gun but you clearly stated you want a new knife so pick up a RAT Cutlery of your choice, due to the gator does not mine picking his teeth with the RC3 or RC4 after he chewed you up...:p just having fun with you but seriously you are to close to the gator your wife had every reason to be scared...they are not to be messed with and if you see one ,how many are there you do not see....stay clear and enjoy the RAT cutlery blade of your choosen, for bike riding,I would think the RC3 is a better choice, due to it smaller dimensions:thumbup:

I did keep my bike between me and that gator. It's kind of dry right now so they are not moving too much but I did notice there seem to be more of them around. I think I will go with the RC-3, as you say, it will be easier to ride with. When I get some more cash I will also buy an RC-4. I'll put the Bud Nealy on Ebay.

You wont be sorry, RC-4 is an awesome knife.

But seriously, don't turn into gator food!

:jerkit: Give me a break, I'm guessing you think that a .45 will hit a guy in the shoulder and spin him around 5 times before he hits the ground, and a .22 is the best sniper round because it will bounce around inside some ones skull:rolleyes: Bullets dont bounce off of gators even .22's

If you want protection from gators, run away. Or get a gun, your not Mic Dundee.

You're guessing wrong.
You are wrong.

How many gators have you seen shot?
With what caliber?
Handgun rounds will bounce off Gators depending where they are hit,the cailber and angle of the shot.
I'm sure many rifles rounds would do the same.
If you watch the hunting channel you can see a big Croc hunt and what rifles they use.
In Florida we have to snare them and use a bang stick.

My intention is to never be on a gators diet. While we were out biking there were many people on the trails walking with kids and/or pets. The gator population is definitely increasing and I think the chances of human/gator incidents will be on the rise. I guess maybe the best option is to have my G26 in a backpack and the RC-3 or 4 on the bike frame.

I too have seen bullets deflected by a gators thick skin, it can happen.

If I were you, I would just carry a roll of duct tape.

You just get around behind them, quickly drop onto their backs, use your forearm to hold their jaws shut and duct tape their jaws and head. At that point they become completely docile and you can pick them up and cradle them like a baby... They love it, really.

Oh, I forgot, when you jump on them, you need to yell "CRIKEY". It seems to help them relax.

Bullets do bounce off gators...I live in Florida and I've seen .40 cal P.D. rounds bounce off and the gator keeps coming. And if it's mating season, they'll come after you. I've seen a 13 foot gator come out of the water and get a pitbull. If you don't believe it, come down next spring and stand at waters edge...you'll see more clearly...

It's not the skin that things bouce off, it's the chitinous (SP?) plates. I've seen people try to sopear them with 1" diameter stainless harpoons and bend the harpoon without penetrating the plate.

Bullets bouncing off depends on if you hit the chitinous plate and the angle of incidence. If it's a nearly 90 degree impact, bullets ill not bounce off. Gators have been killed quite sucessfully, some by poachers, some by people just wanting to get a pesky critter out of their yard, with a .22 LR. If you do not hit the plates on the back and upper side, the bullet will not bounce off.

Gators are actually faster than dogs they can outrun a thorobred race horse for 20-40 yards, you won't get away if you're too close, even on a bike.

I give gators and crocodiles (we have them in Florida too) a wide berth. Liek when dealing with the great bears up north, you are NOT at the top of the food chain in gatorville.

Don't worry about the gators that much most of them unless really big don't look to humans as a food source and will most often shy away or remain still unless messed with. The PIGS are what you need to worry about! I say RC-3 with which you can carve a stick and throw at the pig as a last resort lol.
