Ok- what exactly is a tactical pen?

As ml100 said, tactical pens are just regular pens with a bit of marketing thrown in for flavour. They're just another way for companies to cash in on this ridiculous 'tactical' fad of recent years.

They're the perfect gift for the type of people who spend fat wads of cash on 5.11 or Blackhawk gear and work a desk job.

The whole "tactical" terminology is done to death but a tactical pen is just a sturdy pen that can be used as a weapon. To me the concept does make sense since "the best weapon is the one you have on you" and many of us carry a pen with us all the time...even in places where you may not be able to carry a conventional weapon.

Any sturdy pen will suffice, it doesn't need to be a "tactical" pen....although those are supposed to have impact in mind when designed.

Thanks everyone! Excellent information and confirms what I was thinking myself....

kind of reminds of the story about the space pen developed by nasa to write in zero gravity.
cost millions to create. When they hooked up with the russkys in the space station they were using pencils.

My favorite tactical pen the Zebra 701. Writes great is cheap and plenty sturdy for "hard use".

Could be a Bic pen such as the one depicted in this scene:

Absolutely exactly correct. "Tactical" is not alway so much in the equipment itself but in how it is used and, even more so, in the mind of the user.

This idea that owning the right equipment will either protect you or will transform you into some sort of tactical ninja/operator/commando is just silly. This thing called "tactical" is much more in the mind than in the equipment.

Is it a pen that's a weapon? Why do I need one?

They do make you wonder.

 Sums it up very nicely.

Out of curiosity I have tried three so far (yeah, I know I need stop being curious:D)
Tried a Schrade first. Way to heavy, and with flutes on the body that were so sharp they would have done the most damage to the user. Traded it off.
Picked up a CRKT TAO. Black with silver trim. Doesn't scream "I think I'm a weapon!".
Got a VERY good deal on Tuff Writer Executive at Blade. Very nice pen.

I hope I will stop now (though that Boker Plus .45 looks interesting...hmm).

Aside from all the almost silly ideas about "tactical" pens, a few things most have in common bother me:

They are too long to go into a shirt pocket. (The TAO and Tuff aren't). So you're carry has to be pants or vest pocket.
Or maybe IWB!;)

The clips are VERY strong, not suitable for shirt pocket, but I guess are good if its so long you have to carry it in your pants.

Most come with the Fisher Space Pen cartridge...not exactly my favorite. Some will ONLY use the Fisher and one big name makers pens require a "special" Fisher made just for their pens.

+1

Remember, kiddies; it's mind-set, skill-set, tool-set, in that order.

Of course, tools/toys can be gratifying in their own right, but depending on what you want to do with them, knowledge and skill will serve you far better than any amount of expensive gear, especially in the realm of "tactical" office widgets.

This here is a tactical pen:
