i am not an expert on edge geometry, but i have played around with flat grinds for shaving purposes, and it is possible, but the paper thin edge of a real straight razor hollow grind cant be beat. it allows the blade to be laid flat on a strop, and keep the angles the same when sharpening and makes a precise sharp edge... just my thoughts... :)

18th c. razors were flat ground. Good copies are in demand among reenactors, and very few people are making them.

With a hollow ground straight razor you hone the blade by laying it flat on your stone. That is a great convenience. You also can lay it flat for stropping even if you hold your strop completely flat. With a flat ground blade you could also hone flat on a stone, but you would have to remove about 50x as much material to restore a dull edge and/or you need to sort of torque the blade slightly towards the edge as you hone flat.

non hollow razors are referred to as wedges. they are honed and stroped the same way as a hollow it just takes longer

wedges give little feedback when shaving and some like that others like full hollow (singing ) razors that sing when stropped and that ping the hairs off your face

if i remember right there are listings for like 18 different grinds that go tween wedge and full not just the wedge, 1/4, 1/2, full that are normally listed

Butch i did see a chart on th British blade forum about the different grinds, so yes your right.

I dont have a grinder to do hollows on, plus im a noob thats why i was thinkin of doing one flatground.

Thanks evryone for the info !

Anyone else have thoughts on it ?

what kind of grinder are you using
i dont have a set of wheels but i do have a 2 inch contact wheel on the top part of my KMGs flat platen. its a bit tricky to use but it works

My grinder is a cheapo ,its a Delta shopmaster 1x42. I think the model is SA180.
Im waiting for the financial realities to improve so i can buy a *real* grinder
