I have shown this nice old Camillus Built SFO for Sears earlier on, this is a wonderful example of very nice Stag on a large Dogleg Frame, the Tang Stamping shows it is quite early I am thinking 1920's, the Blades are very worn on this great old Knife, I was lucky enough to come across an extremely tidy example lately with very full and tidy Blades - I think it found it's way to our good friend Mr. Paul Hilborn's Place recently - where he as the official North Dakota Post Master for all knives will do his thing! :D
I am excited to see this Knife when it arrives - which can be whenever as I have managed to live without the Knife so far :thumbsup: :)
I think that Knives like this are very much harder to find, and any early-ish Sears Knife does command attention.

Duncan, my friend, a box arrived but remains unopened. I'll have to confirm when time allows, sure hope it's in the box:eek::oops:;)

That’s a darned nice Lockwood Bros Ettrick kind Sir.

Google “Ettrick Knife History”

I read there the Ettrick was designed ( reputedly ) by the Earl of Wharncliffe and his Game Keeper as a Gutting Knife.
It mentions the comfortable Handle and Short Blade, I’m guessing with English game being Hare, Pheasant etc the need for a 14 inch Bowie probably not so

Beauty Duncan and hard to find, I've seen those stag Sears knives before, if I remember right they have an interesting tang stamp. I might have to have a talk with your US postmaster:D:D

Sweet ettrick! Love stove pipe kick, wrap around spring and colorful horn

Waynorth and Campbellclanman, the Washington Bolster knives and the Camillus Dog Leg are worthy of gawking for extended periods!!!

Hello all, I have a question I'm hopeful the hive mind might explain to me.

What was the intended use this style/pattern of knife? Why the intentional short blade/long handle?

Thanks so much for the name! Spent an enjoyable time disappearing down this thread... https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/what-is-the-definition-of-ettrick.1119303/
...where I see you have an impressive collection Campbellclanman.
Seems the patterns source and an exacting definition of its original intended use is open to interpretation/debate. From a folding gutting knife of small game to a specialised pruning tool. I'd say it doesn't stop at either of those in terms of use being as ergonomic as it looks.

Sweet ettrick! Love stove pipe kick, wrap around spring and colorful horn
It is a pic from online, not in my ownership. Previous to owing a sway back I never appreciated handle fit to the hand, the above looks like a comfortable piece and leverage could be applied with accurate cuts.
It has a lot of attractive features that one alright, love the weirdness all round:)

Ed, Yes- It does have varied tales of where the pattern did originate from, There is a Peach Pruner SO like the Ettrick - and I have confused them a lot in the past.

Lol, Augie- Just back away from the Computer AND Phone my friend!

I highlighted Paul mentioning " Sure hope it's in the Box"...for those who don't know the story- Augie displayed a nice Crucible Scout Knife one day, I collect up Scouts that take my Eye ( 99% of them  ) and I contacted Mr. Augie to see if he would ever want to let it go- well.. there's a guy here in the Land of the Long White Cloud just waiting to leap on it!... It turns out that John ended up so kindly gifting that Knife to me!!! I just couldn't believe it- and was extremely excited - ( again Thank you Augie SO much for that kind Sir ), so Augie sent the Knife to my Official Post Master Mr. Paul Hilborn... Oh man the two of them got me good- Paul kept his voice real calm and didn't give it away when he told me that when he picked it up from the Post Office- there was damage to the parcel- and my knife was gone ( His Knife was still in the packet- i should have clicked on then lol )  :( :(, Man my Heart sunk so so deep - I was honestly so worried, Paul told me that the Post Lady was sure that it was in the building somewhere!!!
Then he let me off the Hook and told me of the conspiracy to scare the living :poop: out of me- and I can tell you they got me good.
Bast*#@s lol
I think that is why I had to have Heart surgery a few years later - not trying to make you guys feel bad - but hey :D

Paul my friend, That Catt - Rob knows well- he was first in line for that one, I am looking forward to helping the Knife become whole again, I will post before and after shots of this.
My friend you can do what you want with the Knives, That Camillus Sears Stag should be Stamped on the Tang STA-SHARP, S-R & Co.
I couldn't really see the stamp in the sellers Photos, But that Knife was honestly the best I have seen of this sort, and I would be surprised if it had any other Stamping- I could JUST see a wee corner of the Stamp to make me feel good about it!

Here is a shot of the Stamp of that Lovely Stag Sears I posted just a few posts up ^

Good times Duncan:D:D

Lot of history in that tang stamp, ties together the Sta-Sharp line and Sears Roebuck & Co, it's probably been used on other Sears knives but I've only seen it on these stag knives. Great addition to your collection buddy:thumbsup:
