So we have threads to post beautiful old knives, and fancy new knives, and now thanks to scrteened porch, ordinary inexpensive used knives. But what about old wrecks of knives? Am I crazy?

Oh why do I keep buying old knives that are probably beyond repair? I guess I get $3 worth of entertainment out of photographing them and finding out what I can about them here. This one I bought because it's an old Remington and the covers almost match my kitchen floor. :D

And here is a Barlow that I thought looked kind of neat. I have no idea who made it. If there ever was a tang stamp, it rusted away.

Perhaps one of you craftsmen can use knives like these for parts. I mean, those bolsters look kind of cool, and I hate to see them thrown out. Anyone else accumulating stuff like this? Post 'em. And if anyone has a use for parts knives, let me know. :)

Thanks for posting those pics!:thumb up:

I love the looks of thoe old knives, and each one of them tells a story. They were carried an awfully long time and for a awfully long way on a journey of life. Somebody got more than the purchase price of use out of them, and they have some great stories to tell if we listen quietly.:D

Great knives with awesome character!:thumb up:

edit to add; Heck, there's shell left there. Sharpen it up and use it for letter opener, string cutter whatever. Light use. Let it live again.

Great stuff r8shell, I'd have snapped both of those up too :)

Here's a couple of mine - I may have to upload some more pics ;) :D

Chip out of the MOP and a lot of blade wear, but this is an early Bontgen & Sabin Butterfly Knife :)

Sadly, there's only one blade left on this ivory Brookes & Crookes Whittler, but still a useable knife I think :)

Not much left of the blades on this Ibberson Chesterfield Ruler Knife, but it was a catch for me :)

I also thought this unusual Ibberson Wireless Knife was of interest, despite the heavy wear to the blade :)

The Marmade Barlow! :D

This Lewis Barnascone Tuxedo Knife is one of many knives I've bought with a damaged blade :(

This Maleham & Yeomans Scout Knife was in a terrible state when I bought it, but was still an interesting knife I thought :)

I couldn't resist buying this Jack from Mulberry Cutlery Co in spite of the worn-out blades.

I pick up a lot of MOP knives with chipped covers.

This old Rawson Brothers knife is worn out, but...;)

There's a lot of damage to this old TEW Horseman's Knife, but it's the only one I have.

Not much left of the Lambsfoot blade on this Thomas Turner, but I couldn't leave it behind :o

Likewise with this William Rodgers Jack

The blades on this Wostenholm Farmer Jack had seen a lot of use and abuse, but it went to a good home nonetheless :)

Nothing wrong with old wrecks, lots of history there. I've been known to pick up a wreck, this Chris Wolf has weak snap, play, loss of blade but it's a scarce knife and I'm glad to have found an example.

At one of our local knife club meeting, we were looking at some relic knives, and one of my friends suggested they would make a nice display!

Pretty cool, despite my bad cellphone picture!

That's a pretty good idea. :)
I keep looking at that Barlow on the lower left. I'm imagining a guy saying to himself, "I can get another day's use from this". :D I mean, that one must hold some kind of record!

i love old wrecks. for me it's trying to fathom how and why they got themselves all beat up and broken!

imagination can be very entertaining. Forensics history of old pocket knives makes my day.

LOL!! What a great idea for a thread r8shell, I love these pics! Old worn/battered pocket knives fascinate me. What a story they tell of so many years of use.

My paternal Grandfather's pocket knife, probably from the 1940's thru... ? He was born in 1912 and passed on in 1987. I miss him very much.

Believe it or not, Jack Black, I can't find that IXL Wostenholm Schrade sash-weight stockman you sent me. It'll turn up.
I've tried to stop buying this sort of thing- ever wonder what you'd look like if you were a pocketknife?
I know I have more and worse somewhere, but this is the best I can do for now. That Robeson (top) is actually in pretty good shape. The New Holland Barlow is by Utica, and the 25-center on the bottom has no name, but an incomplete patent number. I also think my predecessor cast a replacement bolster in place.

r8shell This is a great idea for a thread. I think we all have acquired some wrecks over the years :D

Camillus #11, which has a lot of life left in it.
John Primble Congress, I have a parts knife bought for this one.
Keen Kutter Jack, Great knife, just a pair of broken scales.

I have had the Camillus and the Primble in one of my knife boxes for over 30 years. I had forgotten about them until my interest in this forum appeared last July.

Maybe with the help of some of my new friends I fully intend for these to see pocket time again :D:eek::D:eek:

Buzz, what works for me is keeping her kitchen knives sharp-sharp. She's a great cook, but only a so-so knife maintainer. (I do warn her whenever I've just done a pass through the knives, restoring their edges.)

Give it a try?

With the title "Old Wrecks" I first thought I needed to post a picture of myself :)
