Older 501 with Micarta Handles

First of all I would like to comment on Buck's customer service. I recently sent an older 501 back to them for repair and it came back to me within 2 weeks better than new. I had to look hard at it to see it was the same knife I had sent in! My question is,When did Buck change over from the Micarta handles to the wood inserts? The wood is nice , but there is something about micarta handles that really look classic.Does anyone know the first year of manufacture for the squire series? Thanks in advance---C.L.

We made the switch from micarta, which we called Buckarta, in about 1981. The 501 was called the Esquire up until about 1985.
