Olive oil for knife maintenance?

After doing some research it appears that mineral oil is generally recommended for oiling and maintaining a knife, especially when protecting it from rust. But unfortunately I haven't been able to find any mineral oil in my local area, and was wondering if olive oil (or any other food grade oil) would be a suitable substitute?

I've used it plenty of times before with no issues. However, it can go rancid I believe.

Not sure where you live but most any drugstore would have it and supermarket as well look in the drug area of a supermarket not in the cooking oil section.

hey dude,
Its the same oil they use for treating the wood on cuttingboards(food grade mineral oil) Ikea sells a good size bottle for about $9,it will last you forever-if that doesn't work send me a PM and I will ship a small bottle to you for free.Just checked looks like Ikea MO can be ordered online,my original offer still stands if you cant get some for some reason

Olive oil will go rank, mineral oil won't. Get the food grade Mineral Oil, it's also good for treating Hung Chow . ;) :D

if not using your knives for food prep, check out Ballistol or Rem oil. Excellent lubes.

And Skyhorse......hysterical!!!!!

As mentioned Olive oil will go rancid. I have been able to find mineral oil in the drug store section of the super market. I also came across another suggestion yesterday-grape seed oil. Don't know where to get that off hand, but thinking maybe Whole Foods Market.

Fyi, baby oil is mineral oil with a little fragrance.

Unscented baby oil is mineral oil you can use on a knife. True olive oil might go rancid but works. Vaseline Petroleum Jelly works better than either and is also food safe.

Drug store mineral oil (laxative) comes in larger (lifetime supply) sizing and is cheap, same as all other mineral oil but packaged differently and less expensive. Use it on all my knives to keep them food safe. Darkens micarta and other synthetics, but can be reversed by scrubbing with soap to remove oil.

If you can't find mineral oil at your local drugstore ask for paraffin instead. Sometimes it's labelled as that.

Any store that has a pharmacy section with have Mineral Oil. Look under Laxatives. About $3/pint.

I like wax, like Ren. Wax just because it doesn't leave things all oily and sticky....

Not a good for food prep knives though, more of a longer term storage solution use for me.

They sell it in every grocery store and pharmacy in the country, most likely. It's incredibly common. It's sold in the pharmacy/laxative section of stores. If you have a CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, Kroger, or any other major store they'll have it.

^^^ I'm going to go ahead and give this post a 9.5.

I'd rather use a proven knife lube. If you're looking for food grade, frog lube. Otherwise, Finish Line Extreme Floro.

I've used olive oil, Rem Oil, HOPPY'S gun oil, 3 in 1 oil, WD-40, and (used) motor oil and transmission fluid to lube my knives.
Never had a problem using any of them.
I use my knives for food prep, too. Never had a problem there, either, in 55 plus years.
Generally speaking, once you wipe the knife down after applying the lube, there is not enough of what ever you used left to hurt you. (or even add flavor to what you're eating, for that matter.)

Another vote for Olive Oil,It`s readily available ,works perfectly, and our Kitchen Knives will never sit long enough to go rancid
