One handed opening multi-tool?

Does anyone make a multi-tool where the blade comes out one handed? Hopefully with a thumb-stud or some such but a switch-blade SAK would be sweet!

I've got a swiss army soldier that fits the bill but I was wondering if anyone makes something a little smaller. Something like a swiss army tinker or super tinker with a thumb-stud would be perfect.

ok...do you want a multi-tool, or do you want a SAK?

If you want a MT, I believe the leatherman wave blades are assisted.

If you want a SAK, I have no idea.

Several Victorinox 111mm models have thumb holes on the blade. Leatherman Skeletool, Wave, Charge, Surge, and several others also have thumb holes. All the tools on Buck Xtract can be opened with one hand. SOG has one model with assisted opening blade.

SOG Powerassist has assisted blades on the outside and Leatherman has a few with blades on the outside too if that's what your looking for.

I never noticed the thumb hole on the leatherman tools you mentioned. Verrry interesting. Also, the xtract looks like a possibility. Thanks.

You're welcome. Leatherman holes aren't big and round like Spyderco's, they're kinda small and oval. You're not going to flick the blade out real quick, but you can definitely open it with one hand.

I have always wanting a small one hand openable SAK, but at the end i end up using 2 knives solution...

so i bring a small 84mm victorinox (sportsman or tinker small) for using its screwdrivers and other SAK feature on the environment where i dont want to scare any people.put it on my jeans coin pocket, and also clip a small onehand openable folder (i use cheap sanrenmu knives and make them supersharp) also a small kershaw leek or small spyderco would be just great...

so far it works great for me... havent miss any small one hand operable SAK after this configuration..

wish you luck on your search buddy...

Tinkers of whatever size would need a lot of modding to cut away frame and handle to make a stud accessible (possibly rendering other tools useless), to say nothing of adding the stud. I think Iyonk has the right idea if that's the size tool you want.

Otherwise I'd stick to the Leatherman one-handers. The blades are decent enough they could replace your separate EDC blade at least for utility use. Haven't handled a SOG PowerAssist but it seems like giving up a lot of tools for very little gain in the dual assisted opening. Given SOG's tendency to rip off Spyderco and other makers, my vote would be for a Leatherman.

I see Leatherman have cut back their knife range. My son has an old one (E307X) with a few drivers, carabiner/opener and a 154CM blade with a thumb stud and a moderately useless launcher mechanism. He's a horticulturalist and finds it ideal as compact in his pocket yet useful tools.

Question. Do you mean a blade that opens or the whole tool opening?

The knife opening has been covered. The opening of a tool in itself is a centrifugal force thing. It's a function of how tight the pivot point is, some are loser and can be opened this way. Take one arm in your hand and snap it down like you were trying to open a knife. Good luck. ;)

I don't remember it being mentioned or even if it's still available - but I have an old gerber - 20+years USA made that you just flick your wrist to deploy the plier. - a more recent gerber offering is the suspension- all tools deploy from the closed position and cutting blades one serriated other plain but weird shaped) are one handers. Not familiar with the Leatherman's that open that way other than the skeletool which is awesome but with limited tools on board!
Peace

yea the leatherman wave and charge have 4 things on the outside that have thumb holes to open them one handed the blades on the standard one are 420hc so not great but decent enough. They have a clip point blade, a fully serrated blade, a saw and a file that can be opened without opening the leatherman

Smaller options would be either the Leatherman Freestyle or Skeletool. The Freestyle is the nearest in size to a standard Vic SAK, but it's also very limited in tools. I'm hearing decent things about the Gerber Octane though I've not handled one myself.
