Hello- I'm thinking about buying eather a Cold Steel 18" Latin machete or an Ontario 18" military issue machete. My main uses will be doing some light wood chopping(saplings, etc.), cutting grapevines and possibly some small splitting. Based on these tasks I am looking for a thicker and heavier blade(not a tramontina). Which machete would you recommend? I am open to any other brand recomendations. Sorry if this has been asked before.....

I guess this is as good time as any for my first post...

I would definitely recommend the Ontario over the Cold Steel. It is a thicker heavier blade. Get you an Accusharp or a bastard file to go with it and you should be able to chop all day long.

Stick with the regular handle, the enclosed handle can be a knuckle buster.

Best of luck.

If thicker is what you're looking for (though I'd suggest looking for a broad blade, not a thick one) then Ontario is what you want. :)

Ontario all the way, then modify it to suit your needs.
I personally stay away from the riveted versions & I get the molded handles.

I convex the edge, round the butt of the handle, square the majority of the spine, & round the spine towards the end for batoning.

Good luck & enjoy!

Although I have been happy with most everyhting I've had from CS, the machetes don't take heavy use very well in my experience.

Maybe not what you're after, but I would suggest looking at the Condor line of machetes. Condor's are just about as good as it gets, IMHO. Great blades, sharp out of the box, and they won't kill your wallet, either.

+1 on that. There are some great heavy models out there.:thumbup:

I might recommend the new Bolo machete they just came out with, or their Outback model. Good forward-weighted designs. If that's not intense enough for you, then go with the Beaver Tail. :)

plus one ! I modded my Ontario , got rid of the plastic handle guard thingy and added wood scales , made my own sheath too. My favorite choppah ! :D
