I think the question is why wouldn't you? Sounds like a perfect use for powder SS that is very durable and cost effective now to be used for bush useWhy would you take a hard use blade with thick stock meant for heavy jobs and make it from s35vn?
I'd like to hear more about this. I haven't watched his stuff in a few years now.Nothing to contribute about the knife, but I can’t stand watching Gideon Tactical
It isn't very durable though compared to many other options out today. For that premium price certainly better options to bad had.I think the question is why wouldn't you? Sounds like a perfect use for powder SS that is very durable and cost effective now to be used for bush use
It's a balancing act between toughness, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance. And then you get into economics and marketing. One could argue that 14c28n would make more sense on a large blade like this, but then you get into marketing and 14c28n has a low brow perception, so it would be a hard sell. Magnacut is certainly tougher for the same edge retention as s35, but at what cost? Or they could run S35 and draw back the temper to a lower hrc, loosing edge retention but gaining toughness. It isn't very durable though compared to many other options out today. Irc it has roughly vg10 levels are toughness maybe a touch more. It just doesn't make sense with a bk2 style or esee 6 style to me. Everyone is obviously entitled to their opinion however.
Oh, it’s just personal preference, pettiness on my end, all combined with a bit of pet peeves on my part. Anytime someone uses opinions and sweeping generalizations and treats them as gospel I get annoyed. Same thing with people speaking on “tactical stuff” and “self defense” when there is no experience there, outside of playing it with a hobby. Like I said, it’s probably me being petty.I'd like to hear more about this. I haven't watched his stuff in a few years now.

OKC is like ESEE, just worse...![]()
I feel like that thumbnail says it all.
It feels fake. I've never had that reaction to any knife I've ever bought.
I don't think I even made that face when my son was born.
It's the classic YouTuber problem- sensational gets views, so it's hard to find honest videos.
As far as the S35VN, I've seen enough evidence that it's pretty tough in the humble ESEE 3.
Patrick famously broke one in testing, but he really abused the heck out of it.
I've abused mine some, and it's held up perfectly fine.
Smaller knife, sure, but it's also thinner.
Now OKC just seems to be continuing with the ESEE train.
It'd be nice to see them do something different than ESEE, but riding the coattails seems like that's what they're about.
Definitely not worth that "Oh!" face.OKC is like ESEE, just worse...
I don’t wanna deal with rust. I don’t wanna worry about my knife rusting if it’s a rainy day or if I’m going in a wet area, whether boating at rivers/lakes/sea. I don’t wanna go around with oil in my pack and I don’t wanna cut food with a knife that is either rusted or that will risk rusting if I do so. Call me picky. I’ve had a few non-stainless knives (1095, 52100 mainlt) and I don’t think they perform much better than stainless ones (at least not nearly as much as the online/armchair survival crowd says). 3V would probably be the only “non stainless” I would go for as it has decent rust resistance, toughness and edge retention. However there are no knives that are full tang, 6.5-7’’+ of blade length in the same price range as either an okc rat 6 or a Buck 120 ($150-220) and that are made in the US/Europe. The closest thing (that I found) matching that description, hence having 3v, full tang, and a large blade, would be the 3v CS Trailmaster, which where I live is not available for less than $350, and even then, it’s from Taiwan. The other route would be the custom one but I’m not going to spend a small fortune on a sharpened piece of metal, especially not on one that I’m not gonna hang on some wall or put in a glass container. As for Magnacut, same thing as 3v in terms of abiding to the specs I listed and also, price, you won’t find any large magnacut fixed blade, let alone at a decent price. Never seen a knife in AEB-L, but that stuff is quite tough, though fairly lacking in edge retention, as for Niolox I know Fox has made a couple of large fixed blades in that steel, the Reichart designs iirc, but even those are about the same price as the rat 6 (slightly more expensive actually), edge retention not nearly as good and toughness very similar. Never seen a 14c28n with a blade over 5’’, so even then, I suppose it’d be a custom, which I’m not gonna deal with.I'll just say this:
AEB-L
14C28N
Niolox
MagnaCut
But also, why does it have to be stainless? What will you do? Chop and baton under the sea?
CPM-3V would be perfectly acceptable. I have uncoated 3V knife for years now, and I'm yet to have any issues with rust.
While S35VN is not a bad steel and is fairly tough for stainless, it'd not be my choice for a blade of such size.
So, I get it, they wanted to please the "stainless guys".
And they also wanted a powder steel to call it super steel so they can charge more.
And S35VN was readily available for decent price, while still being tough for stainless.
They also boast about edge retention, while I don't think primary concern of guys buying blades such as BK-2 and ESEE 6 is how long will they keep push cutting paper.
I kinda understand that at thickness and geometry of BK-2 almost anything is going to be tough (sharpened prybar) so S35VN kinda gets a pass there, but ESEE-6 style knife is full flat grind.
I've also seen guys with regular carbon RAT7 and even 5 complain on chipping in various Facebook group.
I've also seen guys posting pics of SP-1 bent in the handle and my SP-53 broke at the handle (there is a hole in the middle of the stick tang, and that's where it snapped).
IDK how will that steel hold up at that geometry and how good will their HT be. But, this is hard pass for me.
Typical youtuber schemes. As if these videos were targeted to children and not grungy 50 year olds from like Tennessee or somethingDefinitely not worth that "Oh!" face.
I have AK-47 Field Knife in CPM-3V, and yes it is full tang. Made in Italy. Got it for less than 150€ and have it for years.I don’t wanna deal with rust. If you have any suggestions in the $150-250 price range with a tough/high edge retention stainless, or nearly stainless, that is full tang and that has a 6.5’’+ blade and isn’t made in Asia, you’re welcome to share.
5.5’’ blade, the made in Taiwan version is €150ish (€190 in Europe with customs and all), the made in Italy version has an even shorter blade (5.1 inches) and is €270ish as of today.I have AK-47 Field Knife in CPM-3V, and yes it is full tang.
