I hate to say this, yesterday being the 233rd Birthday of the Marine Coprs, but I believe my SP-1 to be superior to my long-term USMC KA-BARs. Feels and moves great!
I have not tried to "beat-up" either of them. Neither are designed for chopping/batoning but as utility/fighting? knives.
The KA-BAR in all its iterations--USAF, USN, etc is probalbly the most blooded knife in the world. SOMEBODY PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME on the last statement! thanks

Nothing wrong with the SP1. One reason I like my full size Kabar is the hammer capability on the pommel.

I don't have any experience with the SP1, but I love my SP17 Quartermaster and SP5 Bowie.
The SpecPlus line is IMO the best Made in USA Combat/Survival knives for the money. If you shop around you can get factory seconds for even cheaper.

it seems that in general kabar has a better reputation for consistent heat treats compared to ontario which many people claim to be hit or miss. the only ontario I own is a spec plus machete and i can't complain one bit. the only thing I would change is the handle, which is of a hard plastic that tends to crack easily.

I've got one and have put it through more than any other knife in my life. It's actually the only fixed blade I own right now. It's been bent and bent back, retipped a time or two, and sharpened so many times I doesn't really take an edge anymore. (I wish I had a camera.) I prefer the rubber grip over the stacked leather on the original Kabar. I also like the hand-gaurd better, though I removed the top side of the guard on my SP1 just to make it a little easier to get control over the blade via thumb pressure. And the sheath has held up great, and again, I'd rate it above the Kabar's. The Kabar does have a great look to it though and is ceartainly a repectable knife.

its great to hear from someone who actually owns and USES the Sp1. Seems like a great quality knife. Seems so many people favor the ka bar just because. Someone mentioned the SP1 is not built for batoning. would you disdagree?

I've batoned many fence posts with mine, but they're pretty darn thin. I've also gone at a few 2x4s, and it's a bit of a pain to get through them. With a sharpened clip point and the grind type of the knife I'd have to agree that it's not an ideal batoner. I will say that the handle always feels good durring use though.

My friend have one marine combat & i really dont like the handle on the SP,because it's not ergonomics for my hands (i have medium-large hands) The tang on them is not wider than on Kbar.I dont see any reason for me to by an ontario instead on a Kbar and i like the smell of the USMC Kbar :D & i like the pommel too!

I meant to say fence boards, not "fence posts" above, and I meant that the boards were thin. Sometimes I'm not real clear when I type.
Anyhow, I think a wide, flat ground blade, ideally drop-point, (for instance a Rat-7 or RC-6) would be much better for batoning, and most outdoor uses in general.
And I will say I do like the pommel on the Kabar better myself. The SP-1 does offer the lanyard hole though, but you can still rig a lanyard onto a Kabar easy enough I guess.

I have to agree with Horace & NO Disripect to Ka Bar but I own 2 spec plus knives & the big Ka Bar Tanto & have 4 combat tour under my belt. The spec plus knives are great for the money!!!

All my Spec+ knives are great users. The only mod I made was to cut off handle tang as it dug into my hand while chopping. Hard to beat for the price.

The tang is a little wider on the ontario.I have owned both and I still hold my old Kabar near and dear but the ontario is not too shabby the profile is alittle off if you hold them next to each other so are the kabar next gens ,just not as wide and they feel funny when you handle the blade (like if you are about to throw it).
