Opening a beer bottle

I don't know if sticking the tip of a knife under the edge of a beer bottle cap and working the cap off is all that hard on a knife blade but it gave me the creeps doing it with my small Sebenza Classic.

What is the nicest knife you would use to pry off a beer bottle cap?

ps It's a slow Friday.

Why didn't I think of that? :)

I learn something new everyday. Slapping
my head now.

Thanks,
Rich

Get a SAK with a bottle opener. :) I was sick of being caught without a bottle opener and got the SAK Midnight Manager II. It also has a pen so I don't get caught without a pen, and it has scissors, an LED light, philips, etc. It solves most of those "DOH!" situations.

Yea, use the spine. I use my strider SLCC to open my bottles. Yea, it's a strider, and meant for that sort of thing, but... It is 260.00 (my most expensive blade) so that counts as my "nicest" knife.

Don't know how to open a bottle with a blade? If you're willing to accept a 1.5meg email, my digital camera can take video. And I'll have a Rolling Rock, on you. ;) :) :D

Yep, I've taken the cap off using the edge of a table.

Removing a cap with the knife tip, I would work the tip under the folds of the crimp. Twisting the blade will move the crimp away from the bottle. After moving a few of these, the cap will come off easily. It's not nearly as much fun as using the edge of a table.

I'll have to buy some beer and practice using the spine of the blade.

I use the pocket clip using the same method you would use if using a lighter. It works fairly well.

If you have a knife with a large oval shaped hole you can use that. It's tricky but doable. No way I would use the tip of any of my blades.

just grip the neck of the bottle in a fist with the cap a little above flush with your thumb and index finger. then wedge your knife spine under the cap, twist your knife, pushing the spine up against the cap and "pivoting" it about your index knuckle. you can open a bottle with just about anything thats hard, like a piece of plastic or whatever, but im assuming that all of you always have a knife handy, so...

The strider SA or SLCC gets used a bunch for bottles. Ironically, especially today (cause classes are over now here at Umich and it's friday night and everyone wants to celebrate), a lot of my buddies didn't have a bottle opener handy.

I got a lot of:
friendly - "jeez, randy, why do you carry a knife?"
me- "... well... to open bottles." :D

A long departed LEO friend of mine had a habit of using the front sight of his S&W Chief's Special for that.

Then again, out in the woods he'd sometime use the business end to open beer cans.

When I was able to drink beer (my pre-gout days :(), I'd either shoot the top off with my Glock 10mm or just use my teeth, (at least 'till I noticed that my Victorinox Deluxe Tinker has a cap-lifter.).:D.

Bada bing!

Here I am, screaming at my computer the whole time while I am reading this thread.... "buy beer with frickin' twist off caps!" And while I am ranting... if ya gotta stick a lime in your beer, then it is shittee beer. End of rant, I feel better.

Oh Please,
This is so easy. There is no reason to ruin a knife tip or gouge yourself in some silly fashion trying to open a beer. Practice this simple method and you can pop open bottles while every one is sheepishly looking for an opener.

If your blade is wide enough place the spine under the cap about halfway along the blade, or right by the pivot. Place your fist underneath it abruptly with the flat of the blade on the meat of your thumb.
Squeeze your hand to expand the muscle and lever slightly with the blade.
Cap hops off.

A caveat;
As you perform this trick more often you may get sloppy. The risk is that eventually you may twist the balde too far or not hold the bottle firmly enough and slice the top of your hand.

So be careful!!

A SAK is the obvious answer. Try the Bantam...one blade and a combo bottle/can opener/screwdriver. It's thin enough to carry it in your wallet.

BTW, the best beers do not come with twist off caps.:D
