Opinel blade thickness by model?

It appears that the different size Opinels use different blade thicknesses, but that spec isn't listed by Opinel. My No. 7 seems to be around 1.6mm, but I believe some of the larger ones are 2mm.

Does anyone have a listing for all sizes? Failing that, would folks measure their 6, 8, 9 and 10 Opinels and post them here?

I think I'd like a slightly thicker one to beat up in the woods, but I don't know how large a model I'd have to send for to get the next thicker blade.

I have an old #8, newer version #8, as well as a #10 & #12. I'll run a micrometer on the blades tonight out of curiosity...:D

If I remember correctly the #8 Garden knife (INOX) is thicken than the regular #8.

I have noticed that it is not uncommon for knives like Moras that come in both carbon and stainless to use a thicker stock for the stainless models. I don't know if that's the case with all stainless #8's, or just the Garden. Hopefully enough folks will post their measurements to say for sure.

I also think some of the older ones were thinner, from stuff I've read.

I put calipers on the thickest part of my No. 7 Carbone - .06", or 1.5mm.

Bump, so people can find their calipers and the thread.

(People with rulers are welcome, too!)

My two Opinels N°8 in 12C27 are 1,7 mm, that would be 0.067".

Here are mine. Measured with a cheap-o set of calipers at the top of the blade closest to the pivot (where it looked to be thickest).

No. 4 - 0.78mm - carbon, drop point
No. 7 - 1.46mm - carbon, drop point
No. 8 - 1.62mm - inox, spear point
No. 8 - 1.76mm - carbon, drop point
No. 9 - 1.91mm - carbon, drop point
No. 10 - 2.14mm - inox, drop point
No. 12 - 2.27mm - carbon, drop point

Great information! Thanks, everyone.

It is surprising that Opinel has all those different blade blanks and different gauge handle slot cutters - but that's cool that they do. I like that going up or down gives you either more strength or better slicing where less strength is needed.

I think I'll get a 10 to spear point and trim the handle down.

My Opi's; still need to measure the blades though... :foot:

I flattened the point on my #10 (second knife from the top) and did a drop point on the old school #8 (bottom knife) - all modded by me.:cool:

Sorry to bump this thread but after searching the net and reading a lot of various stuff from total different sources (including Bladeforums, prior registering) and not finding a thing (or at least consistancy in measurements), I've decided to register to Bladeforums to ask about Opinel's blade thickness and I'm glad I've founded this thread!

I'm planning to buy an Opinel No 8 soon, INOX version with either a walnut or bubinga (rosewood?) handle. After seeing a youtube video about an Opinel with bubinga, the author was saying that the highly polished blade (same blade material of the other Inox version I think) of this particular model was thinner than a regular No 8 Opinel. Is that true? It seem the case from what I was seeing in the video but I was having a very hard time finding the thickness specifications of Opinel's blades until this thread.

Anyone here can confirm this? How much thick is the blade from the bubinga (rosewood) model? I know the Opinel's blades are already relatively thin, I was in fact just wondering if that highly polished blade of the bubinga model might be a little too flimsy compared to the Opinel others equivalent (same size) models?

It is my understanding that the "Effinel" models (skinny handles) have a thinner, more flexible blade than the standard handle models of the same size, regardless of which wood is used for the handle.

The standard models would have the normal thickness blade for each size, no matter what handle wood (or plastic) is used. It would be a manufacturing and logistical nightmare if a standard stainless bladed No.8, for example, with a Beechwood handle used a different blade than the same knife with an Olivewood or other exotic wood handle.

Thank you both! I was having a hard time finding concrete measurements of the blades! Really helpful! I agrre with you that producing a different blade for the same model (just different handles) would be really surprising and costly at the long run.

This is the video that made me searching for evidences :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPFwhq94v7c

You can skip to 3:15. The guy was saying the blade of the bubinga model was somewhat thinner than his other No8 model, and by the look, it does seem to be thinner. Maybe it's the perpective of the camera or something else, I don't know.

I have two #8's a carbon and the luxe with inox and the luxe is ever so slightly thinner. I think they took some material off getting that mirror polish.

Thanks again! The extra polishing just might be indeed the cause for the slightly thinner blade.
