My parents brought this Opinel back from France in the early 1970's. From end to end (folded) it measures 4 1/4". Blade is 3 1/4" long. Until I started to look online I didn't realize how many models existed. Any help in identifying mine will be greatly apppreciated.

If you look at the locking ring, you'll see a number 8 on it. With the measurement on the size, you have a number 8.

Don't worry about it, asemery. ;) My username here indicates the 5000 knife-related questions I have, and probably 2K will be dope-slap worthy!

http://www.knifecenter.com/item/OP8...eel-blade-locking-varnished-beech-wood-handle says that the locking ring in the #8 since 1955 locks the blade in both the open and closed position. The locking ring my knife only locks when the knife is open. Are there 2 locking ring choices? I can see a notch cut in the locking ring in the other picture.

The pre-1955 Opinels had no locking ring at all. From 1955 up until 1999, the locking ring only locked the blade in the open position, but not when closed. In more recent versions (2000 and later), the locking ring locks the blade in both positions. The smallest Opinel sizes (think it's #02 thru #05) still don't come with a locking ring at all.

(I have an Opinel fillet knife that I bought back in the '80s, and it's locking ring only locks the blade in the open position, but not when closed.)

As a (lets be honest- recent; two ish years maybe) fan of this classic and award-winning French beaut, reading this thread is like watching the kids experience Disney World for the first time. Except- I am a kid too (like I said, I've only been on the Opinel bandwagon for a few years lol)

Opinel's should be like the finishing school of pocket knives. Take off the locking ring, and use it for a while as a friction folder. You'll learn, or refresher learn, a lot about using a knife as a knife should be used.

Amen. I can't remember the last time I even used the lock-ring. Still got all ten fingers.

Thank you. That makes more sense. I thought there was a certain page I souuld refer to. I guess that Opinel owners like to talk about their knives.

A long thread will be broken up to so many posts per page. The forums are also in pages because of the many threads.
