Recently I was getting ready to order a couple Opinels with the raw handles, to try my hand at carving one. I was wondering what the dimensions of the handle were. I wanted to know how big of a piece of wood I would have to work with. I could not find anything on Opinel's web site. There are pictures but no dimensions. A quick search on Blade forums and the net didn't find me the dimensions either. So I just waited for my knives to arrive.

So it looks like it is 1 3/16 inches in diameter.

Where the flair of the handle reaches it's full diameter to the end; is 2 1/2 inches. With a 2 inch section being full diameter. Overall the closed knife is 5 1/8 inches.A standard no. 8 knife is 4 5/16 inches closed.

O Old Biker , are you going to stain between the bolster and duck and give the duck a Mallard (or other breed) paint job?

You did a great job on the carving. :)

That is an interesting idea, that hadn't occurred to me. I'm kind of liking the stain idea. I haven't decided if I want to paint the duck, or leave it so that the wood grain will show.

Really nice carving, but isn't it going to be a bit uncomfortable to use?
Rich
It probably will get uncomfortable quickly, if used for heavy cutting. But I don't foresee it getting much heavy use.:)

Very cool, OB ! What made you do the duck?

Nice job O Old Biker ! I've never seen a pommel duck before. :)

Thanks for reporting the measurements, I've wondered that from time to time, but never pulled the trigger and ordered one. How was the wood for carving?

I bought the cherry wood handle. With a good sharp knife it isn't to difficult. I used the spey blade on my Boker Whittlers Congress for almost all of it.
