I'd appreciate members' opinions about the "Scottish Dirk" that is marketed and sold by Cold Steel. Quality? Is this primarily an ornamental blade or does it have any usefulness? Also, does anyone know who actually makes this piece?

Hi there
I have one of these. I think they are made in India. The whle package is pretty rough, with only a passing reference to an early dirk design. the blade on mine was razor sharp and is probably the best feature. It is however rather thick with the edge ground on "knife style" rather than formed like a sword edge. The Cas early dirk is much better if you want a nice handling piece, mine was not sharp though.

Thanks for the information.. I like the thought of it having a substantial, sharp blade.

Does anyone know how far the tang extends into the handle?

Hi there
the tang extends right through on my one. The pommel screws on to it. Very tight but possible to undo, couldn't see any locking compound but there may have been.

I like mine, I hunted all over for it, and finally just got on the waiting list with Cold Steel. Was it worth the wait? Not really. I am now looking to use every knife I buy, and I can't bring myself to use the Dirk. Very sharp edge, other than that, if you're looking for a user, I don't know. My kukri machete and Bushman get more use. I think I'll take it outside and play with it today. If you're planning on using it for combat, then you should buy it :D. Other than that, for use, I really don't see it. I don't think it even warrants being called a safe queen.

I think I'll go ahead a purchase one. I'm not sure I have a real use for it, but that's never stopped me on a purchase before. Not much risk. If I don't like it, I'll give it away as a gift to one of my friends.
