I got my Blade magazine today and they had an article on the new Browning Barker/Crowell knife which is made out of 1084 HC and there is an ad for the new Rambo knife (I actually find the knife intriguing - Loved Flatgrinder's copy in a recent thread!) which is made out of 1060. I am not familiar with characteristics of 1084 or 1060, any makers or users know anything about them?

1084 makes an excellent blade and 1060 I would use for a chopper. These are just plain carbon steels and the performance in wear resistance and cutting ability are related to carbon content .1060 good,1084 better 1095 best !

In terms of resistance to gross blade failure though the order is opposite, 1060 at around 55rc is virtually indestructible. 1084 is a great compromise, and 1095 is very sensitive to heat treat, it can go either way. I've heard 1095 is shallow hardening, and on thicker blades will have a softer tough inner while the edge and outside of the blade is hard, not sure if I buy that on knife thickness stuff though.

Thanks guys. Can you tell me how 0170-6C fits into that mix?

0170-6c is carbon v which was used in the USA made cold steel knives (the becker's and cold steel knives were made by Camillus) this is an high carbon low alloy steel. You can find more info on the elements contained in this steel by searching through the threads in the Camillus collectors forum.
