Opinions on knife engraving?

The more I am reading about knives, the more I think I really got the wrong gift.

I’m new to knives, but getting interested really quickly. I just carry a little Kershaw I was given years ago.

I got a Benchmade Casbah 4400 as a gift for the man in my life. I got his last name engraved on it (I didn’t think he’d mind because it everywhere, every entryway and even his usernames), but now I’m afraid I completely botched it. He’s not really a “knife guy”, but he does keep his EDC until it falls apart. He did want another benchmade and told me some of the features he did/didn’t want.

My question is.. is engraving sort of a faux pas in the knife community? Would it ruin a gift for you?

Engraving it would surely add to the sentimental value for him. Benchmade allows you to get pretty creative with the engraving tool on their website so you can really get it done any way you want.

In my opinion it looks best when its subtle. Not smack in the middle of the blade, but maybe offset slightly towards the handle on one side no bigger than the benchmade logo... thats what I would like.

I personally don't like engraving, but I know I'm an oddball when it comes to my own stuff. Lots of folks like engraving on items to make them more personalized.

Maybe it was just a custom knife thing, thanks for your input guys! I was really getting nervous about everyone saying “you got it engraved?” a little snidely but I appreciate the feedback and I hope he likes it.

I plan on getting the same one for myself, I’m very impressed with it!

Dislike it if I am purchasing it myself (might sell later); like it as a gift (never sell those anyway and appreciate the sentimental value).

Engraving is extremely popular, especially for gifts. We engrave thousands of knives per year.

I actually got it from you guys, thanks for the quick shipping and great customer service! I’ll be getting another one soon, I love this knife.

I love the engraving, looks like it is part of the knife and not an addition.

No stigma I am aware of.
I'm actually thinking of having a quote put on two knives I have;
"Freedom isn't Free"
on a Buck 110 and Buck 119, using a script font. :)

Glad to hear it! Let us know if there is anything we can help with!

If the knife is gifted to me then it is OK to have engraving. If it is a knife for sale, engraving would be a huge turn off to me.

Ruin it? I wouldn't give it a second thought. Knives are wonderful gifts because the recipient will think of the giver every time they use it, which I hope will be often. It could be engraved in Slobovian, for all I care. I would still enjoy using it.

Now those socks that my sister-in-law gave me for Christmas...that's a topic for a different forum.

I personally would not have my knife engraved if I had to seek it out and commission it myself.

Would really appreciate someone having to done for me as a gift.

Definitely no stigma I am aware of.
This.

Wife or kids bought me an engraved or etched knife, I would love it. My wife bought me a leather case for one of my Leatherman multitools engraved with our last name on the side and I loved it.

I would never do it for myself though...

Perfect, this is exactly what I did. Giving it to him today so I hope he loves it :)

Would I engrave a random blade I'm buying? No. Would I like a gifted engraved knife? You betcha!
