Opinions on the Gerber AR 3.00?

I just got my 10 year old son his first knife. It is a Gerber AR 3.00 from Walmart. Does anyone have any opinions on this knife? Is it any good? I have a Gerber SLG 3.25 that I am pretty happy with. The AR 3.00 seems to be fairly similar to my SLG 3.25 but I don't know what the blade material is on the AR 3.00. The blade on my SLG 3.25 is ATS-34. Overall the AR 3.00 is a little shorther and thicker than my SLG 3.25.

Blade material is "high-carbon stainless", so its probably something like 420HC.

My buddy has an AR 3...the black finish is GONE after a year of casual use. I have no idea how well it holds an edge, or as to the fit and finish.

Its probably a decent first knife...But next year, when its almost worn out, buy him a spyderco.:D

I have an AR 3.0. I believe that Gerber used a Teflon type coating on their blades, and yes, it's not that durable. I have a Schrade 60TX as well with the same coating and it scratches simply by cutting corrugated cardboard. Gives it character:) My 3.0 was actually very well finished - didn't use it all that much at the time, but for the most part seemed to hold an edge OK for an inexpensive folder. By that I mean, about equivalent to AUS6. It should be fine for most light duty things, easy to sharpen.

Hope this helps - gord

The blades are 440A. I have the Gerber 3.5 and the 3.0. I like them very much. I have been carrying the 3.5 as my daily carry for several years and have never been disapointed (except for the time I lost it.) They are slim, light weight, cut well and are easy to sharpen. They are also cheap enough that you won't cry if you lose it. I think you made a very good choice.

440A, as i have heard, but a few years ago on Gerbers site they were declared to be AUS8.

Mine is a second knife that my wife keeps in her bag, so it is not used so much. I used for half a year and have had no prblems with it.

The liner lock still stands at the left corner, supporting the blade with the whole liner surface. Just once it has failed a spine whack but not thereafter.

It is a nice knife, even to play with. Mine flips out, quick like an automatic.

Maybe the only drawback if your son finds out how to flick open a folder.:D

Since it was a gift from his father , it's the best knife in the world...

I have one , I bought it a few years ago. It was my the 3rd or 4th Gerber pocket knife and the 1st imported version. The fact that it was imported bothered me back then, but now it doesn't matter and I still buy Gerber knives. Compared to other knives in it's price range its OK, mine locks up tight and I carry it in dress pants. I use it for light duty, mail , fruit etc. , I can't say how well it holds an edge but mine is shaving sharp.

I have both 3.0 and 3.5. I like them both, but the 3.0 has seen the most use. As others have said it's lightweight, easy to shapen, and cheap enough that if it's lost or damaged it can be replaced.

Decent knife for the price, never was that fond of it. It just did not seem to fit my hand very well. Good lock up and holds an edge pretty well and it has survived my 12 year old.

I have considered buying a Gerber 3.00 and will likely do such in the near future. Currently, I have a Gerber/ Winchester that is very similar in design. Wal-Mart is currently selling them for $27 in my area;)

I personally find the knife to be very nice. The only thing is that the Teflon coating is suseptible to wear off.
