I had never heard of Windlass until I read it in a thread on Bowie Knives. What I have found indicates they make Carbon Steel traditional styled knives. Are they any good? How do they compare to the old German made Bowies that used to be the standard years ago?

Thanks for any input,

As far as I can figure it out, they were a supplier of Atlanta Cutlery, and finally bought them out some years ago, using them as an outlet for their products. Good, bad, and indifferent. Some of their work looks like fantasy to me, some of it IS fantasy, and a lot of it would work OK for re-enactors. I've read that they will replace pieces that aren't heat-treated right.

A lot of their catalog write-ups are hype, but in general, they make pretty good knives, at fairly decent prices. They do stand behind what they make, but their heat treating is questionable sometimes. I've heard that in more than one place. Their fit & finish are pretty good, but using quality is hit or miss.

One of the members over in the Himalayan Imports forum etched a Windlass kukri, one of the ones they supposedly make for military issue in India, and found that the heat treatment wasn't very consistent.

I'd say get one, of you like their designs, spend some time in the field with it, and post back and let the forum folk here know how it goes.

thx - cpr
