Saw Conquest the other night on the History Channel, and they featured weapons of the Native Americans, mainly the plains tribe IIRC. Anyway I've been wanting to make a war club for sometime can anyone point me in the right direction. Come on Yvsa, I know you gotta be out there somewhere.....

inquired a little over a year ago about Last of the Mohicans clubs, and I found the movie prop extras being sold online. They are gone now. Here is at least one link for you:

But the variety from nation to nation, and even individual to individual must have been enormous. In addition, the raw materials would vary from location to location. I don't mean to be discouraging, but there isn't ONE type.

Here is a site from one of the makers of the props:

good luck.

[edit: it was Mannoucher. Nice person.]

Have a cousin in Cheyenne who studied indigenous peoples has his college major. Professional student, took 25 years to graduate.
Anyway he does know quite a bit about this kind of stuff. He has made his own war clubs, shields and all other kinds of stuff including the lodge that was picked to be displayed at the State Governors house.
He showed my family how they Indians tanned leather (brain tanning) and that was a lot of fun.
I could ask if he knows a good place to start if you want.

The ball club is the one I was interested in, but the gunstock club does look cool. I've already got my wood picked out I just want some pointers and pics (which were provided) Thanks!

I've seen a few gorgeous specimens with steel blades that looked like they were knapped stone. South African tribes have a similar device called a 'Knobkerrie' that figured prominently in the Zulu wars of the late 19th century. Good luck on your project.

I believe that the "Knobkerrie" originated in Ireland, or maybe Scotland. It was orriginaly a walking stick, that doubled as a club.
IIRC, that is. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Cudgel or Shilelagh.(Shil-lay-lee). An effective and venerable weapon, the club. the Normans invading england in 1066 still had clubs in common use, and boy, are they cheap and available. Of course, today clubs are used to kill large fish, play sports, and in Law enforcement and Martial arts.

Without the club, many inventions would still remain undiscovered. In the proto-human culture, the tools were stick and rock. ALL weapons and tools from the past and from now are descended from one or the other, or a combination of both.

I already have a good pc of wood ready, I just wasn't sure if the "ball" of the ball club was all one pc, from the pics from one of the links solved that. Has anyone made one before, pointers?

I made a steel point for a friend of mine who made a gunstock club. Karl's a huge guy and he made his club to fit. Solid oak and I can hardly swing it!!!!
Sorry I didn't get here sooner, but have had many issues to deal with lately.:(

I'm just using cedar, yes I like cedar it's really, really easy to work with. Tried to work with some Blackjack and just about killed myself:confused: I don't plan on crushing any heads with it, so cedar works for me.

ball clubs where made from one piece of ironwood...useally the root end , it was the favorite weapon of the Algonqian tribes including my own the Anishinabe of Mn.

I don't know why, but somehow I had the impression that there was a rounded knapped stone in rawhide affixed to the end of the club. I had no idea that it was rounded wood.

A friend brought a shilelagh for me from Ireland. It is a murderous thing...heavy headed, solid shafted root or limb end. You can "hear" the skull crushing!

He got a blackthorne walking stick for himself. Much more genteel.

Well....I made something similar to a ball club? I couldn't get the ball part of it right, now it looks more like a South Pacific Indian war club. It looks like a ball club, but picture the ball being cut in half, making the face of the club flat. It's mean and I wouldn't wanna get hit with it. It was fun though and I'll definitely try to make another.

Crazy Crow used to have a Ball CLub Kit that looked promising. I always have wanted to try one out but never have. You can find them
here.

Kismet the one your thinking of is the Plains style with a wooden shaft and raw hide piece that holds a stone head there are various versions.
