Type cara mia into the translate and select Italian to English

in Spanish it means my face so....but I've only up to now heard the term used in Italian such as in this 60's tune by Jay & The Americans - it would sound kind of strange translated as "my face' ;) :footinmou ;)

Cara Mia why must we say goodbye?
Each time we part my heart wants to die
Darling hear my prayer
Cara Mia fair
I'll be your love till the end of time

Cara Mia mine
Cara Mia mine
Cara Mia mine
Cara Mia mine

A male singer with a deep voice had it on a record in the early 50s and it was a VERY beautiful song. I think it was the song that two of my classmates used at their wedding :)
Guess I might have shown my age

What does she think it means ? Cara mia [ in italian]does mean my beloved. Caro can mean beloved but can also mean expensive . Of course some wives are both beloved and expensive !!!

LIke any language a direct translation of things is tough. For example, in English we say "I love you" interchangeably in a friendly way (like to a dear friend) as well as to lovers. In Italian, "ti voglio bene" would be the proper way to say "I love you" to a friend or someone who isn't your loved one, but literally it translates to something like "I want good for you."

Cara Mia tends to be one of these sort of interchangeable ones, too, which is relatively rare in Italian because of the volume of words, relative to English, in the language. Cara mia is like "me dear" so it's the type of thing that works for the spouse as well as if like a grandma was saying it to a kid.

Dan! Have you been listening to Jay and the Americans on oldies radio, or watching the Addams Family on TV?

Cara Mia was written by the composer Montovani, it was a huge UK hit in 1954 for a British singer named David Whitfield. Montovani's string orchestra played on his version. The song also did well in America, leading to appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and making Whitfield one of the first British singers to make an impact in the US.

Just two cents, but isn't that what Gomez Addams said to Morticia all the time in 'The Addams Family'?
